Post-doctoral Research Associate Health - Economics & Health Systems (89546)

Reference: MAY20258137

Expiry date: 16:00, Thu, 15th May 2025

Location: Liverpool

Benefits: 30 days holiday (pro-rata)

Duration: Full-timed, fixed term appointment (until 31st August 2025)

The Department of clinical sciences at LSTM is at the forefront of research and implementation that addresses health systems and delivery challenges in low-resource settings. We are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to support a high-impact study focused on multimorbidity and emergency care in sub-Saharan Africa. This is a full-time, fixed-term position from June 2025 to August 2025, with the possibility of extension to August 2026, subject to approval of a grant extension.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Multilink study, an external pilot cluster randomised trial conducted in Malawi and Tanzania. The project aims to evaluate the feasibility of a full-scale trial of a complex intervention targeting patients with multiple chronic diseases presenting to emergency care. The study includes health economic, quantitative and qualitative process evaluation components. You will have primary responsibility for coordinating these diverse workstreams and working with international partners and stakeholders to ensure the research is delivered coherently and to a high standard.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Provide project coordination across study domains, including quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
• Support development, refinement, and delivery of data collection tools and training materials
• Act as a focal point for study-related communications across partner organisations
• Coordinate with site teams in Malawi and Tanzania to support training of health workers and patients/carers as part of implementation of the complex intervention
• Analyse qualitative and quantitative data, draft scientific outputs, and contribute to dissemination strategies
• Assist with reporting to funders and other stakeholders, including participation in progress reviews
• Contribute to the development and implementation of work plans in line with ethical approvals
• Provide technical guidance to field site researchers to ensure protocol compliance

This is an excellent opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in health systems, health economics, or social science research, and with strong coordination and communication skills.

The successful candidate will possess:

• A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., health economics, health systems research or social science)
• Demonstrable experience working on applied health systems research in low-income countries
• Familiarity with cluster randomised controlled trial designs and implementation
• Strong experience in mixed methods research, including qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
• Experience of drafting reports, academic publications, and presentations for a range of audiences
• Knowledge of health systems and/or non-communicable diseases in low-resource settings (desirable)
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a proactive, organised approach to project management
• Willingness to travel to Malawi and Tanzania for short field visits

(For a full list of essential and desirable criteria, please refer to the job description and person specification.)

Additional benefits of joining LSTM:

• 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus Christmas closure days
• Generous occupational pension schemes
• Government-backed “cycle to work” scheme
• Affiliated, discounted staff membership to the University of Liverpool Sports Centre
• A range of additional family-friendly policies
