Job description

What it's like to work here

You’ll work as part of our Communications & Fundraising Directorate, supporting a Strategic Portfolio and reporting to a Head of Planning & Programmes, with a functional connection into the Strategic Portfolio Office.

As a member of our wider portfolio, programme and project management community, you’ll have opportunities to share learning, develop best practice and contribute to the continued evolution of strategic delivery across the Trust.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

What you'll be doing

You’ll help ensure that the Inspire Millions Strategic Portfolio operates efficiently, effectively and in line with agreed governance and delivery frameworks.

The portfolio includes a number of key strategic initiatives to transform how we reach and connect with new and more diverse audiences so we can inspire millions of people to connect with nature and culture, turning inspiration into meaningful engagement and impact for our cause. Through reimagined content, powerful storytelling and inclusive calls to action – including a major fundraising appeal – we aim to engage people wherever they are, build shared momentum and inspire large‑scale change.

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.

Who we're looking for

The National Trust’s commitment is “For everyone, for ever.” Bringing that promise to life starts with the people that work here. It means building teams with a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. It means creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Our positions are open to all, and we welcome applications from all backgrounds to support our ambitions of reflecting the communities we serve and ending unequal access. You’ll bring a broad range of the following knowledge, skills and experience, shaped by different roles, sectors or career paths, and the judgment to apply them effectively at scale;

  • You’ll have significant experience of portfolio management, strategic planning, PMO leadership, or programme management within a large and complex organisation.
  • You’ll hold a relevant P3M qualification such as MoP, MSP, P3O, ChPP, PMQ or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • You’ll have experience of supporting governance boards and enabling effective investment decision-making at senior leadership level.
  • You’ll possess excellent planning, organisational and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and communicate insights clearly to a range of audiences.
  • You’ll have strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and relationship-building skills, with experience of working effectively with senior leaders and across matrix organisations.
  • You’ll be comfortable working with ambiguity, balancing strategic thinking with practical delivery, and helping teams navigate change successfully.

We know that great candidates don't always tick every box. If this role excites you and you believe your experience could bring value to the team, we'd encourage you to apply.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
