Job summary

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is seeking portering staff to transfer patients safely between wards and departments using walking aids, wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds. The role involves handling blood specimens, patient notes, and X-rays, with duties including mortuary assistance and after-hours transfers.

You will work within our large Manchester campus, using HIVE for task management and a radio system to stay connected with the team.

• Use of HIVE task management system to manage portering activity and use of two-way radio.
• Convey blood specimens from wards/departments to Pathology.
• Convey patient notes and X-rays between wards/departments.
• Remove deceased bodies to mortuary safely; assist viewing in absence of mortuary technician.
• Accept coroner cases into mortuary in absence of mortuary technician.
• Convey deceased patients from ambulance to mortuary.
• Replace medical gases on wards as required during contracted hours.
• Assist transfer of seriously injured patients from ambulance/helicopter to A&E department.
• Use blood tracking system to improve traceability for patients and department.
• Move medical supplies as needed.
• Assist after-hours transfers: patients to theatres and back (20:00–08:00).

Job description

To transfer patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via means of walking, wheelchair, stretcher or beds.

• Use of task management system (HIVE) to enable effective management of activity within the portering service including the use of a two-way radio system.
• To convey blood specimens in a safe manner from wards/departments to Pathology department.
• Conveyance of patient notes and x-rays to and from wards/departments.
• Removal of deceased bodies from wards/departments to the mortuary in a safe and dignified manner and to assist in viewing in the absence of the mortuary technician.
• To accept coroners cases into the mortuary in the absence of the mortuary technician.
• Conveyance of deceased patients from ambulance to the mortuary.
• To replace medical gasses where necessary on wards/departments for the requirements of patients within the contracted hours.
• To assist in the transfer of seriously injured patients from the ambulance/helicopter to the A & E
• department.
• To use the designated blood tracking system to give a more traceable structure for the benefit of both the patient and the department.
• To help the movement of medical supplies.
• To help transport, where specifically requested, in a safe manner patients from wards to theatres and vice versa after hours, between 20:00pm-08:00am.
