Overview: The Policy Analyst will play an integral role in delivering robust solutions for complex issues through the development of policy, plans, and strategies that promote sustainable resource management in Canterbury.

About the role:

Lead with strategic planning, innovation, and analytical skills, providing top-quality advice and promoting best practices in the region's resource management. Build strong relationships across the Council and in the community, while leading project teams to drive sustainable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver robust solutions for local and regional issues, ranging from urban growth to air, coast, and water quality.
  • Participate in and lead policy formulation with fellow staff, technical experts, councillors, iwi, stakeholders, and the community.
  • Draft policy and planning documents, in collaboration with fellow staff and technical experts, having sought direction and feedback from councillors, iwi, stakeholders, and the community.
  • Establish and maintain cross-divisional and external relationships.
  • Lead and manage projects, and/or contribute toward major projects with other staff.
  • Champion, support, implement, and adhere to H&S policies and procedures.

Skills and experience:
  • Hold a relevant tertiary qualification in environmental management/resource management or equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role, ideally within a regional council environment.
  • Knowledge of the Resource Management Act 1991, and plan development or consent processes.
  • Experience in consultation, working with multi-disciplinary teams, and managing projects.
  • Strong leadership experience, in both the people and project space.
  • Experience in building and maintaining strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Confidence in teaching and mentoring junior staff members.
