Job description

Help shape the future of UK financial services

Are you curious about how government policy can support economic growth, innovation and consumers? Do you enjoy analysing complex issues, building relationships and influencing decision-making?

We are recruiting several Policy Advisers to join HM Treasury's Financial Services Group. These roles offer a unique opportunity to work on some of the most high-profile and fast-moving policy issues facing the UK today, from financial services strategy and regulation to payments, retail banking and fintech.

You do not need previous experience in financial services policy to apply. We are looking for people with strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, sound judgement and a genuine interest in public policy. If you can quickly build knowledge, work collaboratively and thrive in a dynamic environment, we would love to hear from you.

About the opportunities

Successful candidates will join one of several teams working at the heart of government's financial services agenda.

1) Financial Services Strategy

Help shape the government's strategic approach to financial services and support delivery of major Chancellor and Ministerial priorities. You'll work across HM Treasury, regulators, industry and wider government to coordinate high-profile programmes and contribute to policy development that supports growth across the UK.

2) Payments

Join a team working on the future of payments in the UK. From access to cash and payment regulation to emerging forms of digital money, you'll help develop policy that supports a trusted, innovative and world-leading payments ecosystem.

3) Retail Banking

Support policy that helps consumers and businesses access competitive and reliable banking services. You'll engage with partners across government, regulators and industry to help shape the future of retail banking in the UK.

4) Fintech

Work at the intersection of finance, technology and innovation. You'll help develop policy on issues such as digital financial services, artificial intelligence, Open Finance, digital identity and emerging technologies that support the UK's position as a global fintech leader.

What you'll do

Depending on the role, you could:

  • Develop policy advice and recommendations for Ministers and senior officials.
  • Analyse evidence and assess the impact of policy proposals.
  • Build productive relationships with colleagues across government, regulators and industry.
  • Draft briefings, correspondence and responses to Parliamentary Questions.
  • Monitor developments across the financial services sector and identify emerging policy issues.
  • Contribute to major government announcements, events and strategic priorities.
  • Work collaboratively to deliver objectives in a fast-paced and supportive environment.
About you
  • We're interested in hearing from people who can demonstrate:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to weigh up evidence and make clear, well-reasoned recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with a range of partners.
  • Enthusiasm for public policy and delivering positive outcomes for people, businesses and the economy.

Experience in financial services is not essential. We welcome applications from candidates with a variety of professional, academic and personal backgrounds.
