Job summary

Dovetail and Slate is seeking a Plumbing Tutor to join an employer in the justice sector, delivering Level 2 plumbing training within a prison education setting in Hemel Hempstead. You will engage small groups of learners with diverse backgrounds, using patient, empathetic teaching to build practical skills and qualifications that support rehabilitation and future employment.

You will assess learners, plan lessons, maintain records, and promote safety and workshop discipline.

Qualifications

• A Level 2 (or higher) qualification in Plumbing.
• Substantial hands‑on experience working in the plumbing trade.
• Patience, empathy and a genuine belief in learners’ potential to change.
• Desirable: teaching or mentoring experience.
• Desirable: teaching or assessing qualification.

Responsibilities

• Deliver plumbing qualifications up to Level 2 to groups of learners.
• Conduct initial assessments and diagnostics to identify learners’ starting points and needs.
• Plan and adapt lessons to meet a diverse range of abilities and learning needs.
• Create structured training plans that support individual learner goals.
• Assess learners’ practical work and maintain accurate records of progress and achievement.
• Instill industry standards of safety, tool control and workshop discipline within a secure learning environment.
• Provide mentoring and guidance to help learners build confidence and work-readiness ahead of release.

About the Role

We are seeking an inspiring Plumbing Tutor to join an employer in the justice sector, delivering meaningful vocational learning within a prison education setting. This is a unique opportunity to support learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them build the practical skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and shape brighter futures.

You’ll deliver engaging and inclusive plumbing lessons, up to Level 2, to small groups of learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. Many of your learners will have had difficult experiences of education, so patience, empathy and a genuine belief in each individual's potential will matter as much as your technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

• Delivering plumbing qualifications up to Level 2 to groups of learners.

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

• A Level 2 (or higher) qualification in Plumbing.

Desirable (but not essential):

• Experience delivering training, teaching or mentoring others.
• A teaching or assessing qualification.

No teaching qualification? No problem. If you have the trade expertise, you’ll be fully supported to gain your teaching or assessing qualification on the job.
