Job summary

Hernshead Recruitment is seeking a seasoned Control Systems Engineer to lead PLC/HMI/SCADA development for power-generation projects. You will take projects from design through FAT and on-site commissioning, interfacing with protection relays, meters, UPS and BMS/EMS systems.

Ideal candidates have 5–10 years’ experience, strong TIA Portal or Studio 5000 skills, and hands-on HMI/SCADA with WinCC/Unified or FactoryTalk View. UK travel and clearance requirements apply.

Qualifications

• 5-10 years’ Control Systems/PLC engineering experience.
• Strong Siemens TIA Portal and/or Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 experience.
• Proven experience writing PLC software from conception/design.
• HMI/SCADA experience with WinCC/Unified and/or FactoryTalk View.
• Experience with Modbus, Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP and/or OPC UA.
• Able to read and mark up electrical schematics.
• Experience with power generation, generators, switchgear, ATS/AMF, synchronisation or load sharing.
• DSE, ComAp or Woodward experience.
• Comfortable with UK site travel and occasional weekend/out-of-hours work.
• Must have UK right to work and a British passport or settlement status.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and commission PLC, HMI and SCADA systems.
• Produce URS, FDS/DDS/SDS, I/O lists, Cause & Effect and test documentation.
• Develop PLC code from initial design/conception, not just modifications.
• Integrate generator controllers, switchgear, ATS/AMF, synchronisation and load-sharing systems.
• Lead FAT/SAT, I/O checks, loop testing and site commissioning.
• Troubleshoot PLC/HMI/SCADA systems and industrial networks.
• Interface with protection relays, meters, breakers, UPS and BMS/EMS systems.
• Work closely with electrical design, project managers and clients.
• Produce handover documentation and provide client training/support.
• Support and mentor junior engineers where required.

Job description

Join a growing controls team delivering industrial control systems across power-generation projects. This is a full lifecycle role, taking projects from FDS/DDS and control design through PLC/HMI/SCADA development, FAT/SAT and on-site commissioning.

You’ll work across diesel generator controls, switchgear, ATS/AMF systems, synchronisation, load sharing and power management, with a working pattern of approximately 70% office / 30% site.
