Job summary

Portsmouth City Council is seeking a Playground Supervisor to support the Playground Manager in day-to-day operations, oversee staff, resources, site safety and safeguarding. You will work to deliver engaging play opportunities for children and families, respond empathetically to diverse needs, and represent the service in meetings with external agencies.

You will bring safeguarding knowledge, a positive role model approach, and flexibility to work across Saturdays and school holidays,

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills adaptable to diverse audiences.
  • Safeguarding knowledge to promote welfare with contextual focus.
  • Empathetic, inquisitive and creative approach to engaging with children and families.
  • Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Experience with relational and restorative practice when addressing behaviour.
  • Knowledge of play and playwork, reflective practice and risk in play.
  • Capability to meet physical and mental demands of the role.
  • Ability to deliver engaging play opportunities for children and families.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Playground Manager in daily running, staff oversight and safety.
  • Deputise for the Playground Manager when absent and ensure quality service.
  • Deliver and engage children, young people and families in varied play opportunities.
  • Respond empathetically to play needs and promote safeguarding.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while building trusted relationships with families.
  • Engage with external agencies to embed the playground in the community.
  • Attend safeguarding, community or partnership meetings as required.
  • Participate in CPD opportunities and promote inclusive practices.
