Job summary

DISCO in London seeks a Staff Software Engineer (Platform) to lead large-scale data platform initiatives and mentor senior engineers. You will drive architectural decisions, own critical subsystems, and ensure performance, reliability, and scalability across teams.

You will design and implement high-quality, maintainable code using JVM stacks (Kotlin) and modern data tech, build streaming data pipelines, and collaborate with product managers to align technology with business needs.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in backend engineering with big data platforms
• 7+ years in SOA, Docker-based services, microservices, API design
• Experience with large-scale, high-availability systems
• Security-focused system design experience
• Leadership in major software projects; independent and collaborative work
• Expertise in high-availability distributed data processing
• Proficiency with gRPC and Protocol Buffers
• Experience JVM stacks including Kotlin and gRPC
• Deep knowledge of relational and non-relational stores (Elasticsearch, Cassandra, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
• Cloud-delivered data platform solutions experience
• Experience selecting/extending third-party components for operational leverage
• Familiarity with Agile, feature flags, and observability tooling

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for large projects
• Design systems for high performance, scalability, and reliability
• Own architecture and drive critical subsystem improvements
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and executives to align tech with business goals
• Develop and maintain scalable, high-performance data software for a petabyte-scale platform
• Ensure code quality via rigorous reviews and best practices
• Solve complex technical problems with innovative approaches
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation
• Build data platform components supporting analytics and ML pipelines
• Develop ETL pipelines and data integration across sources
