Direct message the job poster from Netcraft

Netcraft is the global leader in cybercrime detection and disruption. We’re a trusted partner for three of the four largest companies in the world, and many large country governments. We've blocked almost 200 million cyber-attacks to date, and we take down around 33% of the world's phishing attacks.

Our purpose and passion are focused on just one thing: protecting the world from cybercrime.

Our passion doesn't stop at what we do - it shapes how we work, too. We're proud of our talented team and the value each person brings. That's why we've created a workplace where people feel supported and inspired, from great benefits and wellness programs to fun social events.

The Role

Reporting to Netcraft’s Director for Platform Engineering, you will lead Netcraft’s infrastructure team, as well as making technical contributions of your own. Your direct reports will be other managers (Engineering Team Leads) as well as our most senior individual contributors (Principal Engineers). Your primary remit will be Netcraft’s AWS infrastructure: Kubernetes and Linux/EC2 workloads, across Commercial and GovCloud environments.

Whilst London is stated as the job location, we’re also excited to meet candidates who would prefer to work from our Bath or Manchester offices.

Day to day, you’ll be:

  • Running activities in our infrastructure team: conducting regular ceremonies; prioritising, assigning and reviewing work; and ensuring timely delivery of planned objectives.
  • Line-managing other managers, as well as the department’s most senior individual contributors. This will include an active role in coaching and mentoring engineers, sharing your expertise, and contributing to the growth of our engineering function.
  • Making excellent technical contributions of your own, assigning yourself Jira tickets like the rest of the team.
  • Supporting engineering leadership with strategy: including roadmapping, prioritisation, budget allocation, cost management, vendor selection and hiring.
  • Ensuring high availability and security of Netcraft’s systems and data (both internal and customer-facing).
  • Striving to improve and accelerate the developer experience for Netcraft’s engineers.
  • Managing, and participating in, the on-call roster for the infrastructure team.
  • Monitoring the operational health of Netcraft’s environments, identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks, security risks, and any other issues.
  • Ensuring excellent observability into Netcraft’s environments.
  • Optimising Netcraft’s usage of AWS services for cost, performance, and security.
  • Providing guidance on cloud best practices and security standards.

The reward package

An excellent range of benefits including:

  • Hybrid and flexible working options
  • Minimum of 33 days holiday per annum (incl. public holidays)
  • Pension scheme membership with 4% employer contributions + NI savings
  • Private health cover, including access to a private GP service
  • Equity tracking scheme, so you can share in the rewards of Netcraft's long-term success (eligibility criteria apply)
  • Comprehensive wellness and support provisions
  • Enhanced family leave provisions
  • Life Assurance
  • Two days paid Volunteering Leave per year
  • Free meals, drinks and snacks provided daily in the offices
  • Regular social events such as board game nights, big summer party and annual kick-off
  • Inclusive culture and environment, where you’ll feel genuinely valued and respected; and
  • A tax-efficient cycle to work scheme.

What you’ll need to be successful

  • A proven track record of successfully overseeing and delivering infrastructure projects.
  • Substantial experience in supervisory technical roles, coupled with a desire to teach, learn and grow.
  • The willingness, and ability, to balance managerial and supervisory duties with your own individual contributions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical stakeholders (including high-latency interactions with stakeholders in other timezones).
  • Substantial experience with AWS, with expert-level knowledge of services such as EKS, EC2, RDS, S3 and IAM.
  • Demonstrable experience with complex AWS networking (TGWs, VPC peering, multi-VPC/subnet networking, AWS Organisations, etc.)
  • Demonstrable experience with AWS cost management and optimisation.
  • Experience deploying and administering Kubernetes workloads.
  • A deep understanding of how Kubernetes works (including CNI and CSI drivers, and operator patterns).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, particularly Terraform and/or OpenTofu.
  • Experience managing VM-based Linux environments (particularly RHEL-based), using tools like Ansible, Chef or Puppet.
  • A strong focus on automation and operational efficiency, minimising manual intervention wherever possible to enhance system reliability.
  • A positive, solution-oriented mindset, and ability to take ownership of your work.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience managing other managers.
  • Operated in a scale-up tech company, ideally supporting a SaaS product.
  • Experience with developer-facing tools and abstractions designed to remove infrastructure layer friction (e.g. Spacelift, Terraform Cloud, Atlantis).
  • Experience obtaining (and maintaining) security certifications like SOC 2, ISO 27001 and FedRAMP.
  • Experience running high-availability systems, leveraging an on-call rota to ensure customer SLAs are maintained.
  • Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, RDS (including Aurora), MongoDB or OpenSearch, particularly at scale.
  • Relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer.
  • Experience with AWS GovCloud.

Diversity, equity and inclusion

This is very important to us and through our ally network we actively support under-represented groups. We seek to maintain a working environment that is free from bias, harassment or discrimination and we encourage candidates from any background to apply, regardless of their gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, ability/disability, age, religion, or any other specific characteristics.

We’re happy to make reasonable adjustments to our hiring process to ensure that all candidates are able to participate fully and comfortably.
