Job summary

Barclays in Glasgow is seeking a Platform Engineer to design, develop and improve software that enables our digital platforms for customers and colleagues.

You will work with product managers, designers and engineers to define requirements, implement scalable solutions and ensure secure, observable systems across multi‑AZ environments. The role emphasises collaboration, code reviews and adherence to Barclays values while staying current with modern engineering practices.

Qualifications

• AWS (networking/compute/storage) experience.
• Proven Java engineering experience, especially backend and infrastructure tooling.
• Experience with CI/CD, IaC (CloudFormation) and multi-AZ systems.
• Understanding of secure SDLC, cloud cost optimization and platform observability.

Job Description Purpose of the role To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance. Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives. Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing. Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth. Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions. Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

• Proven experience in Java engineering, with a focus on backend and infrastructure tooling.
• Understanding of secure software development, cloud cost optimization, and platform observability.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

• Experience with deploying vendor products at enterprise scale and maintaining N-1 upgrade path.
• Experience with various languages and build tools such as Maven, NPM, Nuget and PyPi.
• Understanding of package managers like Nexus and how to ensure secure scanning of third‑party artifacts.
• Experience of building and deploying docker images in an enterprise environment.
