Job summary

Symphony is seeking a Security Placement Student to gain hands-on experience in protecting critical infrastructure and modern secure communications. You will support SOC operations, risk management, and compliance initiatives while learning core information security practices.

You’ll collaborate with cross‑functional teams to monitor, assess, and strengthen security posture, with opportunities to script and automate routine tasks.

Qualifications

• Education: Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field.
• Core Technical Knowledge: Basic network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs); Linux/Windows OS; encryption, authentication, access control.

Responsibilities

• Monitor security events and assist SOC team with incident triage.
• Support vulnerability scans and track remediation progress, maintain asset inventories.
• Audit user permissions and IAM controls across internal tools and cloud environments.
• Draft security communications, phishing simulations, and awareness materials.
• Assist with evidence gathering for third‑party audits (ISO/SOC 2) and risk assessments.
• Optionally write basic scripts (Python, Bash, PowerShell) to automate tasks.

Role Description Symphony is looking for a driven Security Placement Student to join our team. In this role, you will gain hands‑on experience in protecting critical infrastructure, learning how modern secure communications operate, and supporting our security operations, risk management, and compliance initiatives. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to help monitor, assess, and strengthen our security posture while developing core skills in modern information security practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Security Monitoring & Incident Support: Assist the Security Operations Center (SOC) team in monitoring alerts, analyzing logs, and triaging potential security events.
• Vulnerability & Asset Assessment: Support routine vulnerability scans, assist in tracking remediation progress, and help maintain accurate technical asset inventories.
• Identity & Access Management (IAM): Help audit user permissions, access controls, and multi‑factor authentication systems across internal tools and cloud environments.
• Security Awareness: Help draft internal security communications, phishing simulations, and educational materials for employees.
• Compliance & Risk Support: Assist with gathering evidence and documentation for third‑party security audits, ISO/SOC 2 certifications, and internal risk assessments.
• Automation & Scripting: (Optional) Write basic scripts (Python, Bash, or PowerShell) to automate repetitive security tasks and logging processes.

Qualifications

• Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Core Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPNs), operating systems (Linux, Windows), and core cybersecurity principles (encryption, authentication, access control).
• Analytical Skills: Strong problem‑solving ability with high attention to detail when analyzing system logs or technical data.
• Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills, comfortable interacting with technical and non‑technical team members.
• Work Ethic & Ethics: High standard of personal integrity, discretion when handling sensitive data, and eagerness to learn in a fast‑paced environment.

Compensation

Compensation: £14/hour Duration: 9 months
