Job summary

Allscreens Nationwide Ltd Exeter is seeking a Healthcare Assistant to support the clinical team with safe, effective care. Under supervision, you will perform phlebotomy, take observations, assist with vaccines and dressings, and help maintain clinical records.

Job description

Working under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for assisting the clinical team in the provision and delivery of safe and effective care to the practice population. Responsible to the Partners for clinical issues and to the Practice Manager for administrative issues.

Key Responsibilities

The primary focus of this role is to provide a high-quality phlebotomy service and support the nursing team in delivering safe, effective patient care. In addition to core clinical duties, the post-holder may undertake a range of Healthcare Assistant responsibilities appropriate to their experience, training and competencies.

Clinical Duties
  • Undertake phlebotomy procedures, ensuring patient identification is checked and informed consent is obtained.
  • Perform clinical observations and investigations, including blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, urinalysis, height and weight measurements, and INR monitoring where competent.
  • Support the delivery of NHS Health Checks and other health monitoring programmes.
  • Assist in the assessment and ongoing surveillance of patients' health and wellbeing, escalating concerns to the appropriate clinician.
  • Undertake vaccinations and other clinical procedures appropriate to training and competency.
  • Provide wound care and dressings in accordance with practice protocols and level of competence.
  • Act as a chaperone in accordance with practice policy.
Specimen Management
  • Ensure all specimens are correctly labelled, recorded, packaged and prepared for collection.
  • Maintain safe and effective processes for specimen handling and transportation.
Patient Records and Communication
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Report significant patient concerns, abnormalities or clinical issues promptly to the appropriate clinician.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, carers and members of the wider healthcare team.
Infection Prevention, Health & Safety
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
  • Safely dispose of sharps and clinical waste in line with current regulations and practice policies.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised clinical environment.
  • Identify and report equipment faults, hazards or health and safety concerns.
Stock and Equipment Management
  • Maintain stock levels in treatment and consulting rooms.
  • Monitor stock rotation and expiry dates.
  • Support vaccine management, including cold-chain storage monitoring and recording.
Team Working and Professional Development
  • Work collaboratively with clinicians, administrative staff and external healthcare professionals to support the delivery of high-quality patient care.
  • Attend practice and team meetings as required.
  • Participate in training, appraisal and continuing professional development activities.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the role, training and competence, as reasonably requested by the Partners or Practice Manager.
