Job description

Bourn Surgery is looking for a confident and experienced HCA/phlebotomist to support and work alongside our dedicated nursing team. We are a rural, dispensing practice serving just over 6,800 patients in the beautiful village of Bourn.

17.5 hours per week, preferably on Mondays and Thursdays, from 8:15 am to 6:00 pm, including a one-hour unpaid lunch break.

Main duties of the job
  1. Support the Practice Nurse with health promotion programmes.
  2. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, recording findings accurately.
  3. Facilitate routine blood pressure monitoring and advise patients accordingly.
  4. Undertake wound care, dressings, and other clinical tasks as required.
  5. Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics.
  6. Carry out BMI checks as directed.
  7. Act as a chaperone as required.
  8. Undertake venepuncture.
  9. Administer flu, pneumococcal, and shingles vaccinations, as well as B12 injections.
  10. When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the Practice Nurse.
  11. Carry out ECGs as requested.
  12. Ensure specimens are checked and ready for onward transportation.
  13. Provide support during minor operations as required.
  14. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
  15. Check fridge temperatures routinely and ensure cleaning as per IFC policy.
  16. Remove clinical waste and replace sharps bins in accordance with IPC policy.
  17. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.
  18. Order supplies, including pathology, LARC, and paper products when required.
About us

We are a rural, dispensing practice with over 6,800 patients in Bourn. We are a teaching practice with allied clinicians including a clinical pharmacist, paramedic, and first contact physiotherapist. Our nursing team includes a lead nurse, two part-time practice nurses, and an HCA supporting the team.

Job responsibilities

Support the practice nursing and administrative teams in delivering clinical and administrative services, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide care within their scope of practice to the patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will assist clinical staff in treatment, preventative care, health promotion, and patient education, as well as supporting the administrative team as needed.
