Job description

Main area: Core Clinical Services
Grade: NHS AfC: Band 2/3
Contract: Permanent
This position will commence at Band 2, progressing to Band 3 after a minimum period of 6 months and upon successful completion of training and competencies.
Hours: Part time - 19 hours per week (2 posts to be worked over 7 days, 2 weeks of 15 hours, 2 weeks of 23 hours, variable.)

Job overview

If you enjoy working with people and want a rewarding role contributing to patient care, join our friendly team of phlebotomists. You will mainly work across wards at Southmead Hospital, taking blood samples and ensuring their safe transportation for testing.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to put patients at ease are essential. The role requires a degree of autonomy, good time management, and adherence to infection control protocols. Physical fitness is necessary as the role involves walking, standing, bending, and manual dexterity.

Main duties
  • Support the team in blood sampling across various departments, including wards and clinics.
  • Perform blood sampling for patients on acute wards, medical, surgical, and high-risk infection departments.
  • Full training will be provided; progression to Band 3 after 6 months upon successful training.
  • Complete numeracy and literacy assessments prior to interview; practical skill demonstration for experienced candidates.
  • Shift patterns are rotational; fixed shifts are not available.

Detailed responsibilities
  • Collect blood samples via venepuncture or capillary methods.
  • Label blood samples accurately and transport them promptly to the laboratory.
  • Participate in the continuous delivery of the phlebotomy service.
  • Follow safety procedures, infection control, and standard operating protocols.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and courtesy.
  • Participate in staff appraisals.
Person specification
Qualifications
  • Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Qualification in venepuncture.
Experience
  • Experience in a healthcare or social care setting.
  • Previous venepuncture experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
Skills and qualities
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to healthcare.
  • Physical ability to meet the role's demands.
