About The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Philanthropy Manager with knowledge of the private philanthropy sector to join the British Museum.

The Philanthropy Manager: Grants will be responsible for securing and stewarding five- and six-figure level gifts from individuals while actively stewarding an established portfolio of donors at an important moment in the Museum’s history.

The British Museum is embarking on one of the most significant cultural redevelopment projects undertaken anywhere in the world. The Masterplan will transform the Museum for the 21st century while staying open, maintaining the founding commitment to keep the collection safe and accessible to the public for generations to come. The Philanthropy Team, as a key function of Development, will play a vital role in enabling the Museum’s vision for the future.

Key Areas Of Responsibility

The Philanthropy Manager: Grants will be responsible for:

  • Maximizing income from Trusts, Foundation and Statutory Bodies for a range of capital and revenue projects, securing five and six-figure gifts by working with senior colleagues to develop high-value donor relationships.
  • Producing applications and reports that are factually correct, well written and presented to the highest professional standard.
  • Work closely with senior colleagues, including the Head of Philanthropy and Associate Head of Philanthropy, in identifying and cultivating new relationships at this exciting time in the Museum’s history.
  • Proactively manage a pipeline of 75-100 contacts, implementing bespoke cultivation and stewardship strategies and deepening their relationship with the Museum.

About You

The Philanthropy Manager: Grants will need to be a proactive, results-driven individual who remains focused and productive under pressure.

  • Degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working with multiple private donors and securing five and six-figure donations
  • Fundraising experience in a complex organisation
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and presentation
  • Able to work under pressures including financial targets and short deadlines
  • Able to listen to donors and shape funding asks in response to their particular motivations
