Job summary

The University of Birmingham invites applications for a fully funded PhD studentship in the Energy Materials Group to develop direct recycling approaches for lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery materials, focusing on LFP, LMFP and sodium chemistries.

The project will explore recovery, regeneration and reintegration of recycled materials into new battery manufacturing processes, collaborating with European and North American partners, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a UKRI-funded

Qualifications

  • Candidates should hold a degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, Electrochemistry or a related discipline.
  • Experience in batteries, energy materials, recycling, or materials characterization is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Characterisation of battery production scrap and recovered materials.
  • Development of electrode delamination and separation processes.
  • Investigation of binder removal and purification strategies.
  • Relithiation and realkalination approaches for restoring electrochemical performance.
  • Fabrication and testing of electrodes containing recycled material.
  • Electrochemical evaluation of recycled cathode and anode materials.
  • Development of design-for-recycling principles for future battery technologies.
