Job summary

University of Warwick invites applications for a PhD project exploring how acoustic fields control particle organisation and polymer crystallisation during manufacturing. You will design an ultrasonic patterning system, couple experiments with COMSOL modelling, and investigate composites using advanced microscopy and property measurements.

The project spans low-viscosity room-temperature polymers to polymer melts up to 200°C, with industry and academic collaboration and opportunities to publish

Qualifications

  • Good 2:1 or 1st class degree in Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
  • Interest in acoustics, ultrasound, manufacturing and polymer composites.
  • Hands-on research mindset with strong experimental and analytical skills.
  • Training will be provided across areas; Athena Gold award noted.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build an acoustic patterning system using ultrasonic transducers and waveguides.
  • Support multiphysics modelling of acoustic fields, particle motion and polymer behaviour.
  • Examine resulting composites with advanced microscopy and characterize thermal, electrical and mechanical properties.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and contribute to publications and conferences.
