Main duties of the job

We are pleased to offer a new and exciting opportunity for an experienced, qualified Pharmacy Technician to work within the Ophthalmology service. You will work with the Senior Specialist Pharmacist for Ophthalmology and support the Medicines Management service to improve medicines optimisation for patients in hospital and the local area. Your responsibilities will include supporting adherence and counseling on eye drops and other medications related to the service, ensuring current medication is prescribed and reviewed, supporting cost savings, and liaising with supply services to ensure continuity of specialist products.

You will also support pharmacy trainees and staff in understanding and optimizing the use of eye drops and eye preparations, enabling them to offer suitable advice and referrals to help patients manage their conditions.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary: Provide specialist clinical pharmacy technician advice to the Ophthalmology service at UHS.

General Duties:

  1. Provide medicines management services to the eye short stay unit.
  2. Support stock management within the eye department, communicating with staff regarding supply difficulties and offering alternative solutions to ensure patient care is maintained.
  3. Review patients admitted to UHS or in clinic settings to ensure they understand how to manage their conditions and medications, conducting shared decision-making discussions and adherence assessments, and providing advice to patients or the multidisciplinary team.
  4. Support service improvement initiatives, including audits, evaluations, and development, actively identifying areas for improvement and contributing to the Trust's values.

You need to be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC, with accreditation in Medicines Management or as an Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT). Additional training in patient counseling is required. This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) with weekend working (1 in 6) and one late-night shift per week on alternate weeks.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience
  • NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science, or equivalent, registered with GPhC.
  • Additional specialist qualifications such as accuracy checking, medicines management, TAQA assessor, or management qualifications.
  • Extensive post-qualification pharmacy experience, awareness of current regulations, staff management, and operational workload management.
  • Experience in medicines supply, CPD commitment, handling patient complaints, team leadership, and familiarity with systems like ESR and E-rostering.
