Job summary

Northumbria Primary Care Ltd (NPC) is seeking a Senior Pharmacy Technician to coordinate the medicines hub activities and support comprehensive medicines management in a primary care setting. You will supervise pharmacy staff, interpret prescriptions for drug safety, and contribute to audits and governance with the Clinical Pharmacist and Practice Manager.

The role requires GPhC registration and relevant qualifications, with CPPE PCPEP training to be completed if not held.

Qualifications

• BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 plus underpinning knowledge as described.
• GPhC registration as a Pharmacy Technician is required.
• CPPE PCPEP qualification or must be completed within 24 months.

Job description

Working for NPC North Tyneside Neighbourhood practices, you will be working between 49 Marine Avenue, Park Parade, Nelson and Spring Terrace surgeries. The Senior Pharmacy Technician will co-ordinate the medicine hub activities to the extent necessary to ensure the development and maintenance of a high standard of patient care, sound teamwork and close co-operation with the clinical and managerial team. The post holder will work under the management of the Clinical Pharmacy Service to deliver a comprehensive medicines management in a primary care setting to ensure a safe and efficient service is maintained, delivering a range of medicines management activities including medicines reconciliation and repeat prescription requests. Pharmacy staff in all sectors and other healthcare professionals will ensure a patient orientated medicines management service is provided, conducting medicines reviews for patients. To work closely with the Clinical Pharmacist to adopt a team approach to medicines management. To work with the Clinical Pharmacist to develop and undertake medicines management audits, to support discussion within the practice and agree subsequent actions.,

• Work alongside other staff and develop their skills to prioritise workload. May supervise medicines technicians, Pharmacy technicians, student pharmacy technicians and pre-registration pharmacists.
• Interpret prescriptions for drug problems such as drug dosage, form and administration. Considers legality, clarity and risk associated with prescribed medicines and prescriptions and make basic interventions to ensure medicines are safe for patients and be able to refer as appropriate to medicines management technician or pharmacist.
• Interpret basic medicine supply information and consider appropriate solutions ensure continuation of supply, referring as appropriate. Assess situations concerning the availability of prescribed medicines and refer non-standard prescriptions to relevant authority.
• Assist and coach practice staff in the collation and analysis of data for reviews/ audits as required improving medicines management within the practice.
• Support embedded systems to ensure governance and operational issues are reviewed, discussed weekly with the team and escalated as required., As Senior Pharmacy Technician, the post-holder will be responsible to the Practice Manager. The post holder will work autonomously in the day-to-day management of the team they manage.
• The Senior Pharmacy Technician will co- ordinate the CSU medicine hub activities to the extent necessary to ensure the development and maintenance of a high standard of patient care, sound teamwork and close co-operation with the clinical and managerial team.
• As Senior Pharmacy Technician the post holder will be on site at the medicine hub every day to deal with staffing issues, informal complaints, ensure the workforce are appropriately supported, trained and appraised
• The post holder will work under the management of the Clinical Pharmacy Service to deliver a comprehensive medicines management hub in a primary care setting to ensure a safe and efficient service is maintained, delivering a range of medicines management activities including medicines reconciliation and repeat prescription requests
• To liaise with pharmacy staff in all sectors and other healthcare professionals to ensure a patient orientated medicines management service is provided, conducting medicines reviews for patients identified by the wider multidisciplinary team or from other medicines management initiatives.
• To work closely with the Clinical Pharmacist to adopt a team approach to medicinesmanagement, acting as a key member of the multidisciplinary team and the wider pharmacy team, providing medicines management advice to healthcare professionals, patients and carers.
• To work with the Clinical Pharmacist to develop and undertake medicines management audits, to support discussion within the practice and agree subsequent actions., BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge e.g. national certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent qualification, plus specialist training and experience equivalent to degree level (or equivalent level of knowledge and / or experience)
• Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
• To hold CPPE PCPEP qualification. If not held will need to be complete within 24 months.

• Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques and methods, It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role
