Job summary

A kind, reliable Care Assistant is needed in Blyth to support a 55-year-old gentleman with Adrenoleukodystrophy and Young Onset Dementia at home with his family. This maternity-cover role offers shifts across Monday to Thursday, starting 22 October, with additional hours possible including overnight care.

You will work closely with his wife, daughter and the wider care team, providing compassionate, high-quality support and personal care.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medication.

  • Build a positive relationship through encouragement and communication.
  • Support caring for the daughter when the wife is at work.
  • Work with the family and care team to meet needs and activities.

Pallitive Care Assistants (cover maternity leave) for a gentleman - £14.67/hr in Blyth - Blyth - NE24

Care Assistants – Blyth Area

We are looking for a kind, caring and committed Care Assistant to support a 55-year-old gentleman in the Blyth area. He's palliative end of life and his wish is to receive his care at home with his family.

The gentleman lives with his wife and 13‑year‑old daughter. He also has three grown-up children. The family have 2 cockapoo dogs, a 22 month named Margot, and a 10 month named Iris. Both are very friendly, also they have 4 guinea pigs Cocoa, Oreo, Crunchie and Cookie.

He has a diagnosis of Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare inherited disorder affecting the brain, causing a progressive loss of physical and mental skills. As a result, he has young onset dementia impacting all aspects of his daily life, along with epilepsy and he is steroid dependent.
He is also high risk of aspiration pneumonia as his swallow reflex has deteriorated considerably.

About the Role

This is now a 24/7 care package, and we are specifically recruiting for maternity cover for the following shifts:

  • Monday: 8:00am – 9:00pm
  • Tuesday: 8:00am – 9:00pm
  • Wednesday: 8:00am – 9:00pm
  • Thursday: 7:00am – 9:00pm

The maternity cover is planned to commence 22nd October, maybe earlier depending on situation. The candidate would start a few weeks prior to maternity cover starting, to get to know his care plan and team.

Additional hours may be available

Additional hours may be available, including overnight shifts starting 9:00pm until 7:00am, which can be discussed at interview.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • The gentleman does not have anything orally, he does enjoy mouth care with swabs which is very important. He tends to bite the inside of his mouth, we manage this with oral gel.
  • He has a peg fitted and has feed and all medication administered this way.
  • He requires full-time care, you will be expected to carryout all personal duties such wash, dress, shave, nails etc.
  • He is fully incontinent, so cleanliness and skin integrity is very important.
  • Administer medication
  • Support with moving and handling is essential aspect of his day, he cannot control/move his own body. He uses a ceiling hoist, has a adapted bed and chair that he uses. Also an electric wheelchair which is carer controlled.
  • Build a positive relationship through encouragement, engagement, and communication. He is non verbal but he listens to sounds and finds this comforting.
  • Support him in caring for his daughter when his wife is at work
  • Work alongside his family and wider care team to meet his needs and access appropriate activities.

  • Have experience supporting individuals with complex physical and mental health needs (informal experience considered)
  • Be confident with medication administration and moving & handling (training provided if required)
  • Have a calm, patient nature with a good sense of humour
About the Gentleman

He enjoys:

  • Being outdoors when feeling up to it, loves listening to the birds in the garden and the trees rustling. The beach is another familiar place for him. People watching he enjoys, the change in voices, shape, colours.
  • Football, especially Newcastle United.
  • He enjoys listening to music.
  • He engages well with television/movies.
  • Loves being included in conversations.

He is a calm gentleman, is very settled. Someone with a similar demeanour would be preferred.

Rate of Pay & Benefits
  • £14.67 per hour
  • Holiday pay accrued at 5.6 weeks pro rata per year
