Job summary

The Blackheath Hospital in London is part of Circle Health Group and seeks a Lead Theatre Practitioner to oversee the perioperative pathway. This full-time role (37.5 hours per week) requires flexible shifts and strong clinical leadership.

You will lead a team across scrub, recovery, or anaesthetics, ensure safety processes are followed, and mentor junior staff while driving development and governance within the theatres environment.

Qualifications

• NMC or HCPC registered practitioner with theatre experience.
• Leadership experience and ability to role-model for peers.
• Strong patient safety, safeguarding, infection control and governance knowledge.
• Scrub leads may require Scrub Practitioner or Surgical First Assistant qualification.
• ENB 998 and/or mentorship course required.
• Approved/recognised anaesthetic course required.
• ILS training.
• Excellent communication and mentoring skills.
• Commitment to personal development and helping others develop.
• Specialist training in a defined clinical area (orthopaedics, robotics, cardiac, major surgery).
• Experience leading audits or service improvement projects.
• Experience in independent healthcare sector or multidisciplinary surgical teams.
• Familiarity with theatre scheduling systems and electronic patient records.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred perioperative care as a specialist or lead within the team.
• Ensure patient safety checks and WHO surgical safety processes are followed.
• Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for theatre practitioners and support staff.
• Mentor and coach junior staff and students; develop competencies within the team.
• Drive continuous professional development and audit/service improvement initiatives.
