Job summary

Habitat Energy is a fast-growing technology company focused on the optimisation of energy storage and renewable generation assets through complex models and trading. A Trading Performance Analyst is sought to drive the success of battery storage trading across wholesale, BM and ancillary services, delivering analytics, reporting and strategy improvements.

The role involves collaborating with trading, data science and tech teams, building dashboards and tools, and presenting insights to clients

Qualifications

  • At least one year of analytics or reporting experience in a similar industry (commodities or finance).
  • Proficient in Python for data analysis using Pandas and Plotly.
  • Strong knowledge of probability and statistics and how to apply them to analytics.
  • Experience with SQL databases and APIs as data sources.
  • Ability to extract actionable insights from complex and noisy datasets.
  • Detail-oriented with accurate reporting skills.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of or interest in energy markets.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse Habitat trading activities and profitability across day-ahead, intraday, BM and related markets.
  • Assess trading strategies to identify areas for improvement with traders and data scientists.
  • Provide insights on market trends, trading outcomes and competitor behaviour.
  • Develop and maintain KPIs to measure performance and investigate drivers.

Performance Analyst

We have a vacancy for an applied analytics specialists to join our team based in Oxford. This role will solve real world electricity trading and optimisation problems across the domains of Habitat Energy energy trading, data science, and renewable energy management. This vacancy is for a Trading Performance Analyst, will play a critical role in driving the success of our battery storage trading operations across wholesale markets (including day-ahead and intraday), Balancing Mechanism (BM), and ancillary service markets (frequency response and reserve services). You will provide comprehensive analytics to evaluate internal trading capabilities, assess market performance, and support the development and improvement of trading strategies. Additionally, you will ensure timely and accurate performance reporting for external clients, contributing to transparency and trust, as part of our market leading offering.


Your responsibilities will include:


Commercial Performance Analysis:


  • Analyse Habitat trading activities and profitability across day-ahead, intraday, BM, and associated bidding in ancillary service markets.
  • Assess the effectiveness of trading strategies and identify areas for improvement; collaborating with traders and data scientists to design and optimise strategies.
  • Provide insight and reporting on market trends, trading outcomes, and competitor behaviour.
  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and investigate performance.

Market Analysis:


  • Explore large and diverse datasets programmatically to understand the drivers of market behaviour.
  • Analyse value across markets and recognise opportunities to improve revenue from those markets.

Client Performance Reporting:


  • Prepare and deliver tailored performance reports for external clients, ensuring clarity and alignment with contractual requirements.
  • Address client queries and provide insights into market performance and revenue streams.

Data Management and Visualisation:


  • Build and maintain analytical tools, dashboards, and models for retrospective and real-time performance tracking.
  • Collaborate with Habitat’s tech teams to integrate successful tools into the company’s product suite.
  • Utilise code and visualisation tools to present complex data in an accessible format for both internal and external stakeholders.

Collaboration and Communication:


  • Work closely with Habitat Trading & Operations teams, Business Development and Commercial Leadership to align analytical outputs with business goals.
  • Stay updated on market developments and emerging opportunities in battery storage optimisation and communicate relevant changes to the wider team.

‘Must have’ skills and experience:


  • At least one year of experience in analytics or reporting roles within a similar industry, such as commodities or finance.
  • Confidence in writing Python code for data analysis work and using associated libraries (Pandas, Plotly or similar).
  • Knowledge of core probability and statistics concepts and how to apply them to analytics.
  • Experience working with SQL databases and APIs as data sources.
  • Ability to extract actionable insights from complex and noisy datasets.
  • Detail-oriented with accurate reporting skills.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrable interest in learning about energy markets.

‘Nice to have’ skills and experience:


  • Existing understanding of GB electricity markets, including BM and ancillary services.
  • Familiarity with battery storage technology and revenue drivers.
  • Experience writing production-quality Python code (version control, testing, CI).
  • Experience in forecasting, either fundamental or machine-learning based, especially probabilistic and time series forecasting.
  • Familiarity with mathematical optimisation and related Python libraries such as cvxpy.
  • Experience in a client-facing role.
