Job Description:

As a Pension Consultant, you will play a leading role in guiding clients through the buy-out and wind-up process, collaborating closely with Trustee Boards and Sponsoring Employers of UK defined benefit pension schemes.

You’ll be part of the Buy-out and Wind-Up Transaction Services team, coordinating with stakeholders and advisers. Your responsibilities include delivering expert advice, building relationships with decision makers, and mentoring junior team members.

The ideal candidate will have experience in pension scheme consulting, from Trustee Executives, actuarial, scheme management, or insurers involved in buy-out transactions. A strong understanding of pensions management and client-facing experience are essential. Exposure to business development and broader pensions consulting is a plus. You’ll work with specialists in pension wind-up and have support from a wider team.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading buy-out and wind-up projects, acting as the primary contact for trustees and coordinating with stakeholders.
  • Providing strategic oversight during scheme wind-up planning and execution.
  • Supporting technical and strategic aspects like scheme and insurer comparisons, lump sum exercises, funding reserve calculations, and surplus sheet preparation.
  • Identifying potential wind-up cases and assisting in their preparation.
  • Contributing to the development of wind-up propositions and promoting team collaboration.
  • Delivering tailored training sessions.
  • Working with clients to agree on budgets and timelines, ensuring service agreements are in place.
  • Ensuring clear communication across client teams for smooth project delivery.
  • Handling client invoicing according to internal procedures.

Skills and Qualifications Required:

Qualifications:

  • Professional qualification in pensions (e.g., APMI, AFPC, or IFoA) or part-qualified.
  • Honours Degree preferred.
  • At least A’ level/Scottish Higher or equivalent experience.

Technical skills:

  • Experience in corporate transactions, risk transfer, liability management, sale implications, and bulk transfers.
  • Knowledge of wider employee benefits to advise clients strategically.
  • Experience advising UK pension schemes in complex environments, such as Trustee or Scheme Management roles.
  • Strong knowledge of UK pensions legislation, disclosure, and statutory reporting.
  • Organizational and analytical skills to manage uncertainty and adapt quickly.
  • Influencing skills to engage senior stakeholders tactfully.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate teams and align stakeholders.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills.
