Job summary

TC Group, a growing Top 20 accountancy firm in the UK, seeks an experienced Payroll Supervisor to lead the payroll team and deliver accurate services for a diverse client base. Based in Steyning, you’ll oversee payroll processing, ensure HMRC compliance and drive process improvements.

The role requires a minimum of five years in payroll, knowledge of UK payroll legislation, and supervisory experience. Hybrid working and a comprehensive benefits package are offered.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a payroll role, ideally within an accountancy or bureau environment.
• CIPP qualifications (or working towards) desirable.
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including auto-enrolment and statutory payments.
• Experience with IRIS Payroll Professional or ability to learn new payroll software quickly.
• Excellent attention to detail and time management skills.
• Ability to work well under pressure with client deadlines.
• Strong communication skills and a client-focused approach.
• Supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
• Ambitious and proactive with a solutions-focused mindset.
• Commitment to delivering excellent client service.

Responsibilities

• Manage end-to-end payroll for a portfolio of clients.
• Review and approve payrolls prepared by junior staff.
• Be the main contact for payroll queries from your portfolio.
• Provide technical training and support for complex payroll queries.
• Ensure timely submission of RTI returns, pension contributions and year-end reporting.
• Keep up to date with payroll legislation changes and keep the team informed.
• Facilitate onboarding of new clients and payroll system setup.
• Liaise with HMRC and pension providers as required.
• Support Payroll Team Manager with internal reporting and process improvements.
• Contribute to onboarding of new projects and acquisitions.

The Opportunity

As Payroll Supervisor, you will be supporting the Payroll Team Manager and you will oversee the delivery of payroll services for multiple clients across various sectors. You will manage a small team, ensure compliance with HMRC regulations, and maintain high standards of accuracy and client service. In addition, you will be involved in leading one-off projects including onboarding new clients, acquisitions and specialist questions.

What You'll Be Doing

As our Payroll Supervisor, you'll be responsible for:

• Manage the end-to-end payroll process for a portfolio of approximately 50 clients, including weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payrolls
• Review and approve payrolls prepared by junior staff, ensuring accuracy and compliance
• Act as the main point of contact for payroll queries from your portfolio, providing expert advice and support
• Support the team with technical training and complex payroll queries as and when they arise
• Ensure timely submission of RTI returns, pension contributions, and year-end reporting (P60s, P11Ds)
• Keep up to date with changes in payroll legislation and ensure the team is informed and compliant
• Facilitate onboarding new clients and setting up payroll systems
• Liaise with HMRC and pension providers as required
• Support the Payroll Team Manager with various tasks including internal reporting, process
• Improvements, onboarding of new projects / acquisitions

What We're Looking For

We're keen to hear from candidates who can demonstrate:

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a payroll role, ideally within an accountancy or bureau environment
• CIPP qualifications (or working towards) is desirable
• Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including auto-enrolment, statutory payments, UK payrolls with overseas employers.
• Ideally experienced using IRIS Payroll Professional or has the confidence and ability to learn new payroll software quickly
• Excellent attention to detail and time management skills
• Ability to work well under pressure with client deadlines
• Strong communication skills and a client-focused approach
• Supervisory or team leadership experience preferred
• Ambitious, driven and desire to grow with the team and the company
• A proactive and solutions-focused approach
• A commitment to delivering excellent client service
