Job description

Pastoral Leader - Alternative Provision
Tradewind St Albans, Hertfordshire 95- 120 per day ASAP Start

Tradewind is recruiting for an exciting opportunity for an experienced Teaching Assistant, HLTA or Behaviour Mentor to join an alternative provision in St Albans, Hertfordshire.

We are looking for a resilient, compassionate, and proactive Pastoral Leader with strong behaviour management skills and experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs.

The successful candidate will work with KS3 and KS4 pupils aged 11-16 in a supportive alternative provision setting. Most pupils are working at a lower ability level, so this role may also suit an experienced primary Teaching Assistant or HLTA who has experience supporting pupils with additional needs, SEMH or challenging behaviour.

The Role

You will play an important role in supporting pupils throughout the school day, helping them to feel safe, settled and ready to learn.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Safely checking pupils into school and welcoming them at the start of the day.
  • Supporting with breakfast and encouraging positive engagement.
  • Helping pupils transition into lessons and encouraging them to attend, remain in class and participate in activities.
  • Supporting pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour and barriers to learning.
  • Managing challenging behaviour calmly and confidently, including using appropriate de-escalation strategies.
  • Building positive relationships with pupils while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries.
  • Providing one-to-one and small-group pastoral support where required.
  • Monitoring pupil engagement, behaviour and wellbeing and communicating concerns to the wider team.
  • Acting as a key liaison between the school and parents/carers, maintaining positive and professional communication.
  • Working closely with teachers and colleagues to ensure pupils receive consistent support.
  • Supporting safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all pupils.
About You

The role would suit an experienced TA, HLTA or Behaviour Mentor who is ready to take on greater pastoral responsibility.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has excellent behaviour management skills.
  • Is calm, patient and resilient under pressure.
  • Can build strong relationships with young people while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Can motivate pupils who may be reluctant to attend or engage with lessons.
  • Communicates confidently with colleagues and parents/carers.
  • Is proactive, reliable and able to use their own initiative.
  • Has a genuine passion for supporting young people and helping them make progress.

Experience working with SEMH pupils, challenging behaviour, SEND or alternative provision would be highly desirable.

Secondary experience is preferred, but we would also welcome applications from experienced primary TAs and HLTAs. As many of the pupils at this St Albans, Hertfordshire provision are working below age-related expectations, the ability to adapt your approach to individual needs is more important than simply having secondary-school experience.

Why Work in St Albans, Hertfordshire?

This is a rewarding opportunity to join a specialist alternative provision where you can make a genuine difference to young people who may have experienced significant challenges within mainstream education.

As a Pastoral Leader, you will provide the consistency, encouragement and boundaries that can help pupils successfully engage with their education.

Tradewind is committed to supporting talented education professionals in finding rewarding roles where their skills can have a real impact.
