Job summary

Bristol Medical School seeks a Laboratory Support Assistant to help maintain the day-to-day running of its research laboratories. Based at the Dorothy Hodgkin Building and Bristol Royal Infirmary, you will assist with equipment maintenance, PPE, waste handling, and stock control to enable research and teaching activities.

You will follow Health & Safety guidelines, help train others in basic processes, and maintain inventories and delivery records. The role is full-time, open-ended, Grade D.

Qualifications

• Some experience of working in a laboratory or equivalent practical skills learned in an alternative environment.
• Good IT skills and ability to learn new software or IT systems as required.
• Excellent organisational skills to manage ongoing tasks and cope under pressure.
• Ability to follow instructions and procedures accurately and timely.
• Proven experience of completing tasks with high accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment and PPE, including testing and cleaning.
• Work in line with Health & Safety guidelines and waste handling procedures.
• Assist in training others in basic processes.
• Maintain stocks of materials and consumables using the University purchasing system.
• Place, check and process received orders; maintain inventories and delivery records.
• Use equipment to support research and teaching activities, e.g. PCR machines and autoclaves.

Job description

Assist in the provision of essential core facilities support: working to support and assist the day to day running of the research laboratories within the laboratories in Clinical Sciences. To provide essential technical support to ensure the smooth and effective running of the service.

Clinical Sciences has laboratories on Level 7 of the Bristol Royal Infirmary, The Dorothy Hodgkin Building and Learning and Research at Southmead Hospital. Research currently centres around Neuroscience, Renal themes, Cardiovascular research, Diabetes and Metabolism and Cancer research. The role holder will initially be based in the laboratories at our Dorothy Hodgkin Building and Bristol Royal Infirmary sites but may be required to work in other areas of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

What will you be doing?

Assist with maintaining laboratory equipment and Personal Protective Equipment, including appropriate testing and cleaning. Working in line with relevant Health & Safety guidelines. Removal and handling of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Assist in training others in basic processes. Maintaining stocks of materials and consumables, by using University purchasing system. Placing, checking, and appropriately dealing with received orders. Maintaining records, such as inventories and deliveries.
