Job summary

SMT Recruitment is seeking an experienced Part Time Bookkeeper in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The role offers flexible hours and strong opportunities to work directly with SME clients on bookkeeping and VAT matters.

Ideal candidates will have AAT or be studying towards it, solid experience with Xero or similar cloud software, and a keen eye for detail. The position requires independent work and reliability in meeting deadlines, with a supportive team environment.

Qualifications

• Proven bookkeeping experience with double-entry accounting.
• Experience preparing VAT returns.
• Experience with Xero or similar cloud accounting software.
• AAT qualification or studying towards it.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Manage bookkeeping for a portfolio of SME clients.
• Process and reconcile bank, credit card, supplier and customer accounts.
• Process invoices and expenses.
• Prepare VAT returns and supporting paperwork.
• Identify and correct discrepancies within bookkeeping records.
• Liaise with clients regarding missing information and queries.
• Maintain accurate and up to date client records.
• Support the wider accounts team with bookkeeping and VAT queries.
• Work to internal and statutory deadlines.
