Job summary

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is hiring a part-time Telephonist (30 hours per week) to join the Switchboard Team. The role ensures a safe, responsive communication flow for patients, staff and emergency services across the Trust.

The post requires flexibility for 24/7 service, shift work including nights and weekends, and willingness to participate in the on-call rota (1 in 6). Previous hospital switchboard experience is advantageous.

Qualifications

• GCSE English and Maths or equivalent
• Experience handling telephone queries in an office environment
• Teamworking and customer care awareness
• Duties include handling calls, directing inquiries and liaising with departments
• Able to use Windows-based IT systems and monitor alarms

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive telephone operator service across Trust sites
• Receive and direct all incoming/outgoing calls
• Pass on messages between callers and switchboard
• Monitor alarm systems and respond to emergencies
• Participate in 24/7 rota and on-call duty (1 in 6)
• Maintain secure handling of keys and records
• Operate paging systems and support reception duties
