Job summary

The Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Paralegal to join the in-house Legal Services team. You will work under qualified solicitors to manage a varied caseload across claims, inquests, and legal advisory work.

You will help with investigations, prepare legal documents, support litigation and coronial proceedings, liaise with clinicians and managers, and maintain accurate case management records to contribute to governance and risk management across the Trust.

Job description

This role is a key member of the Legal Services team, supporting the delivery of a high-quality in-house legal service across a broad range of clinical and non-clinical matters. Working under the supervision of qualified solicitors, the post holder will manage a varied caseload of claims, inquests and legal advisory work of appropriate complexity, ensuring matters are progressed efficiently, professionally and in accordance with departmental standards and legal requirements.

The successful candidate will develop expertise in areas such as clinical negligence, personal injury, employers' liability, inquests and healthcare law, contributing to the Trust's management of legal risk and patient safety agenda. They will be expected to exercise sound judgement, manage competing priorities, maintain accurate case management records and recognise when matters require escalation to senior colleagues.

The role involves active management of a caseload including undertaking legal and factual investigations, liaising with clinicians and managers, preparing legal documentation and supporting the conduct of litigation and coronial proceedings. The post holder will act as a point of contact for internal stakeholders, NHS Resolution, external solicitors, Counsel and HM Coroner, helping to ensure that legal matters are managed effectively.

In addition, Paralegals contribute to organisational learning and risk management by assisting with reports, identifying themes and lessons arising from claims and inquests, supporting governance processes, maintaining accurate case management records and ensuring compliance with departmental procedures. The post holder will provide support on a range of legal matters, undertake legal research, respond to routine legal enquiries and contribute to the continuous improvement of Legal Services across the Trust.
