Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic person to join our team of audiologists in East London. This is a paediatric position based in West Ham Lane Stratford. The department provides comprehensive diagnostic and rehabilitation services for children, covering both secondary and tertiary care.

Audiology is managed by Bart’s Health and we have sites across Tower Hamlets, City & Hackney and Newham, Waltham Forest and Redbridge. We have over 70 members of staff including Clinical Scientists, Audiologists, Audiology Assistants, and admin staff.

The successful candidate will be confident, a good communicator, and able to work well within a large team. You will have a BSc in Audiology or equivalent, and you will be registered with either AHCS or HCPC. At least 18 months post-qualification paediatric experience is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder must be able to:

  1. Perform specialist diagnostic procedures, and provide a comprehensive specialist hearing aid service to children, including determining care plans for individual patients, and involving carers and families as appropriate.
  2. Assist with the day-to-day management of the Paediatric Audiology service.
  3. Take an active role in areas of clinical audit, research, and clinical governance for the Audiology service, which may include designing and completing audits within own field, participating in data collection for larger projects, and contributing to the development of evidence-based protocols.
  4. Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, within professional boundaries, and seek guidance from peers or senior staff whenever necessary.
  5. Carry out all Audiological procedures according to national, professional, and local protocols, documenting any contraindications or necessary deviations from protocol.
  6. Maintain empathy and rapport with the patient during testing to maximize the quality of test results and minimize patient anxiety.
Person specification
Qualifications
  • BSc Audiology OR BTEC qualification in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement & successfully completed both parts of BAAT I and II (or equivalent)
  • Registered to practice with the Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS) as a Clinical Physiologist (Audiology) or registered as a clinical scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of CPD
  • MSc in Audiological Science plus CAC/CCC or Successful completion of the STP in Audiology
  • Eligible/registered as a clinical scientist with HCPC or on the voluntary register with AHCS
  • Advanced courses in Audiology
  • British Sign Language Qualifications
  • Membership with the BAA and/or BSA
  • Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate in Management
  • Working towards postgraduate qualifications
Experience
  • NHS experience within Paediatric Audiology, including behavioural assessment and rehabilitation
  • Responsibility for area(s) of specialty within Audiology and/or general administration
  • Demonstrable operational managerial responsibility
  • Experience of working at a senior level demonstrating clinical competency within the relevant clinical area
  • Evidence and experience of leading change, demonstrating sustained improvements
  • Experience in electrophysiological testing
Knowledge
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Paediatric Audiology, and advanced Audiological test techniques
  • Awareness of the safeguarding procedures to maintain the wellbeing and protection of vulnerable children
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of normal child development and management of hearing impairment in children
  • Understanding of current approaches to hearing aid selection, verification, and evaluation in children
  • Awareness of national Audiology and NHS developments
