Job summary

University of Manchester is seeking an Outreach Officer on a maternity cover basis to support the Institute’s outreach and public engagement plan. The post holder will deliver outreach activities for partners at a national level, including public events, community fairs, science festivals, and museum engagements, working with Royce researchers and stakeholders across the UK to champion materials science.

• Deliver a diverse range of outreach activities centred on widening participation principles to raise awareness of materials science as a discipline
• Deliver an ongoing series of public engagement events to share materials research ongoing across Royce partners
• Organise events with local, regional or national focuses on material science research and innovation
• Build and nurture relationships with stakeholders across the wider materials community to identify their requirements in relation to outreach and appropriately reflect these in the Institute’s activities in this area.
• Design and implement exhibitions and displays highlighting materials research

Job description

Royce is seeking an Outreach Officer to provide a maternity cover within the institute. The role will help deliver of the Institute’s outreach and public engagement plan. The post holder will be responsible for delivering outreach and public engagement activities on behalf of the institute's partners at a national level. These activities will include public events, community fairs, science festivals, museum engagement and exhibitions. The role will work with technical staff and researchers at Royce, and with stakeholders more widely across the UK to champion the discipline of materials science.

The post holder will be an enthusiastic and motivated individual with an interest in sharing their own, and others’, experience and knowledge of the material science discipline. They will need to engage with varied and multiple stakeholders, ranging from school children and the public to materials scientists working in academia and industry.

The post is currently funded until 31 March 2027 in the first instance.
