Job summary

Somerset Council in Wellington, England is seeking a Grounds Operative to maintain public spaces across Somerset. The role is outdoors, hands-on and varied, with duties from grass cutting to maintaining parks, cemeteries and highways.

You’ll join a supportive team and help deliver grounds maintenance and horticultural services that matter to communities. We value commitment and a positive attitude; training is provided.

Qualifications

• Experience in outdoor manual work and using hand-operated equipment.
• Good physical fitness and the ability to lift and move materials.
• Basic IT skills including Outlook, Word, Teams.

Responsibilities

• Carry out grounds and horticultural work such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting and weeding.
• Maintain highways, verges, housing areas, cemeteries, parks and landscaped sites.
• Remove litter, leaves, graffiti and flyposting to keep spaces clean and safe.
• Use hand tools, powered equipment and ride-on machinery with training.
• Support seasonal and emergency work including flood response and snow clearance.
• Drive council vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes, carry out checks and report defects.
• Complete basic paperwork and electronic records accurately.
• Provide a professional, courteous service when interacting with the public.
• Work flexibly to support service needs, including occasional hours outside normal times.
