The Orthopedic and Trauma Clinic in Outpatient Department at North Manchester General Hospital, part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust are currently looking to recruit a Band 5 Plaster Technician to our team. Join our team where you'll have the opportunity to care for patients requiring a number of orthopedic treatments.

We are looking for a Plaster Technician who is compassionate and caring with an ability to focus on the delivery of high caliber patient centered care. To join us, you should have the ability to motivate, inspire and support each other while providing fantastic care to our patients, who are at the heart of all we do. A calm, diplomatic and caring approach and a commitment to provide high quality, safe and effective care is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support on the provision of the orthopaedic technical service for North Manchester General Hospital with cross site working at Trafford General Hospital. This would include the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients requiring a variety of casting materials and splint application. The post holder will possess a wide range of skills and knowledge associated with this area of practice autonomously as well as providing leadership within the plaster room. The post holder will provide expert support and guidance to other relevant professionals, departments and services. The post holder is responsible for ensuring the plaster room is a safe and welcoming environment for both adults and young people while maintaining adequate health and safety requirements associated with practice. The post holder is expected to have a flexible approach.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • GCSE's level A-C/4-9 or level 2 key skills in English and Maths.
  • British Orthopaedic Association casting Certificate
  • Evidence of continuing professional development within trauma and orthopaedic specialist
  • Diploma/degree qualification or equivalent experience and training
  • Relevant safeguarding training and experience
Knowledge
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary agency working
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply it to self, patients and managed staff
  • In depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology of hand and orthopaedic conditions and commonly seen hand truma conditions.
  • Knowledge of infection control principles and tissue viability
  • Sound working knowledge of casting materials
  • Knowledge of improving quality and change implementation
Training and experience
  • Experience of application of casting and splints
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others
  • Able to work under own initiative within boundaries of role
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary team
  • Evidence of being able to lead in and assist others in audits, surveys and research.
Skills and abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to manage own workload

  • Ability to apply, adjust and remove orthopaedic devices
  • Able to access the affect of cast application on patients physical and mental well-being
