Looking for a new direction in your optometry career?

SpaMedica is the UK’s largest provider of NHS cataract surgery, and we are seeking a Hospital Optometrist to join our team at Poole.

As a Hospital Optometrist at SpaMedica, your focus is on patient care, not sales targets or KPIs. No prior hospital experience is needed; we provide full training and support from senior optometrists.

You will be part of our 150-strong hospital optometrist team, supporting our cataract services across various clinics (Pre-op, Post-op, and YAG laser treatments). There are opportunities for development in areas like Medical Retina, Glaucoma, and our private service, Freedom Vision. We also offer the possibility of working from home occasionally.

If you enjoy variety, have a passion for ocular disease, and are eager to learn advanced skills like YAG laser, this role is ideal for you.

About the role:

As a Hospital Optometrist, you will:

  1. Perform pre- and post-operative assessments for cataract surgery patients.
  2. Conduct pre-op assessments for YAG laser capsulotomy referrals.
  3. Obtain informed consent ethically and professionally.
  4. Participate in on-call and weekend rotas as required.
  5. Ensure clinical areas are prepared, with equipment checked before and after clinics.
  6. Complete basic life support and manual handling training.
  7. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in daily clinic operations.

What we are looking for:

  • A qualified optometrist with current GOC registration.
  • Individuals passionate about learning, with higher qualifications.
  • Previous hospital optometry experience is advantageous but not essential, as full training is provided.

Why work with us?

  • Join a team that embodies safety, integrity, kindness, and transparency.
  • Our hospitals, inspected by the CQC, are rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’.
  • Recently awarded Platinum accreditation by Investors in People.
  • Opportunities for growth, skill development, and career advancement.
  • Be part of a caring, community-focused team involved in charity work.
  • 33 days holiday (including bank holidays), increasing with service.
  • Performance bonuses twice a year (up to 10%).
  • Internal CPD provision.
  • Competitive pension and maternity benefits.
  • Recommend a friend scheme (£350 reward for both parties).
  • Free quarterly snacks, flu vaccinations, and DBS checks.
  • Discounts at various retailers and hospitality providers.
  • Ongoing training and development via our learning management system and clinical training team.
  • Paid travel expenses.
