Job summary

Archangel Lightworks in Oxford, UK is seeking an Optical Engineer to design laser communication terminals and photonic subsystems, from requirements definition through field testing. You will model performance, perform trades analyses and oversee integration.

The role involves hands-on lab work, working with lasers, detectors, modulators, and fibre/freespace optics, plus supplier management and technical leadership across projects; occasional travel and potential home‑working where agreed.

Qualifications

• Experience defining requirements on optical systems and trades studies.
• Hands‑on lab tests for optical systems and components.
• Familiar with photonic subsystems and laser tech.

Responsibilities

• Design laser comm terminals and photonic sub‑systems for harsh environments.
• Define requirements and perform trade studies for design choices.
• Model optical performance and perform tolerancing analyses.
• Conduct breadboard testing to validate data.
• Assemble, integrate and test subsystems; support system tests and trials.
• Provide technical leadership and manage suppliers.
