Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking a dedicated Healthcare Support Worker to join our Ophthalmology team at The Royal Alexandra Hospital. You will support patients across outpatient and inpatient services, working closely with nurses and optometrists to deliver safe, compassionate care throughout their treatment journey.

The role offers stable, full-time hours Monday to Friday, with opportunities to develop clinical skills within a specialist service and contribute to a patient-centred care

Qualifications

• Caring and compassionate approach; desirable experience in a caring role or environment.
• Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team while providing patient support.
• Strong verbal and written communication; ability to build positive relationships.
• Follow procedures, protocols and safe working practices in a clinical environment.
• Good organisational skills; prioritise workload and work independently when required.
• Proficient keyboard/IT skills; experience with Microsoft Office applications.
• Flexible approach to working across different clinical locations and supporting service needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality patient care under supervision of nursing and clinical staff.
• Carry out ophthalmology assessments including visual acuity testing, visual fields, OCT scans and tonometry.
• Support patients throughout appointments, investigations and treatment pathways.
• Report changes in a patient’s condition or wellbeing to the appropriate clinical professional.
• Assist with patient transfers, observations, personal care and delegated clinical duties.
• Communicate effectively with patients, carers and multidisciplinary team members.
• Maintain accurate records, manage stock levels and support day-to-day department operations.
