Job summary

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust in Birmingham is seeking an Ophthalmic Staff Nurse on a fixed-term contract. The role is 30 hours per week, Band 5, with ophthalmology training provided.

You will deliver patient care in BMEC, document ophthalmic histories, assist with vision testing, administer medications, monitor vitals and intraocular pressures, and work within a multidisciplinary team. Night shifts are not included.

Qualifications

• RN (Adult) with current NMC registration.
• Keen interest in ophthalmology; training provided.

Responsibilities

• Administer medications via oral, IM, subcutaneous, IV, subconjunctival and topical routes.

• Manage a cohort of patients in Urgent Care Clinics.
• Participate in internal meetings and contribute to the department.

Job overview

The A&E Department of the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) has a full time vacancy for a Staff Nurse. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual who would like to work in this busy and fast paced environment. A keen interest in ophthalmology is essential, previous experience is not essential as training will be provided. Shift patterns include a combination of Early and Late 5 days a week or Long Days 3 days a week, but noNight Shifts.

Main duties of the job

• Clear documentation of patients' current and past ophthalmic history and other assessment information
• Obtain visual acuity on adults and children using various vision testing charts
• Administration of medication (oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous, subconjunctival and topical)
• Vital signs, blood glucose monitoring and measurement of intraocular pressures
• Application of eye pad and cartella (eye shield)
• Support senior staff/colleagues, clinicians and other members of the multidisciplinary team
• Manage a cohort of patient in the Urgent Care Clinics
• Participate in internal meetings and contribute to the betterment of the department
