Job summary

CHEP Pontefract is seeking a Shift Production Manager (Operations Supervisor Band 2) to lead one of our manufacturing shifts, report to the Operations Lead, and develop Operations Supervisors while driving operational excellence in a fast-paced environment.

You will use production data, KPIs, and analytics to improve performance, mentor frontline teams, ensure health and safety standards, and deliver sustainable results with a culture of accountability.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience leading production teams in fast-paced plants.
  • Experience developing frontline leaders such as Supervisors or Team Leaders.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing KPIs and performance management.
  • Experience using production data and analytics to drive improvements.
  • Experience handling investigations and employee relations processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Operations Supervisors and frontline employees to improve capability and performance.
  • Drive shift performance through the analysis of production data, KPIs, trends, and operational metrics.
  • Use data-led insights to identify opportunities, solve operational challenges, and improve productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Lead daily, weekly, and monthly performance reviews, ensuring actions are focused on measurable outcomes.
  • Create a culture of accountability where decisions are informed by operational evidence and performance data.
  • Develop leadership capability across the shift through coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Manage employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinaries, and performance management processes.
  • Lead continuous improvement and site optimisation initiatives that deliver tangible operational benefits.
  • Collaborate with site leadership and cross-functional teams to support strategic projects, process improvements, and operational change.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities May Include:

  • Provide hands-on leadership by mentoring, coaching, and guiding employees, addressing employee relations issues, and fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Lead and enhance safety performance on shift, promoting a proactive safety culture through training, accident prevention, and rehabilitation programs, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Manage shift maintenance activities, resolving equipment breakdowns in coordination with the maintenance team to maintain uninterrupted plant operations.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives on shift, implementing best practices to enhance efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness across end to end operations.
  • Monitor and manage the plant’s operational costs and yield, working closely with the Plant Manager to optimize performance and contribute to the overall plant objectives.
  • Address performance and attendance matters in collaboration with HR, ensuring that all plant staff meet operational expectations.
  • Ensure full compliance with CHEP procedures and work instructions, ensuring tasks are completed accurately and in line with company standards and operational goals.

CHEP is looking for a Shift Production Manager; internally, this role is referred to as ‘Operations Supervisor Band 2’, to lead one of our manufacturing shifts at our Pontefract site. Reporting to the Operations Lead, this is a key leadership role responsible for developing Operations Supervisors, leading frontline teams, and driving operational excellence in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

This role is more than managing a shift. We’re looking for someone who can combine strong leadership with data-led decision-making, using production data, KPIs, and operational analytics to improve performance, identify opportunities, and deliver sustainable results.

You’ll play a critical role in developing leadership capability across the shift, creating a positive and accountable culture, and driving continuous improvement initiatives that support the site’s long-term operational strategy.
