Job summary

CHEP UK Limited in Durham is seeking an Operations Supervisor to lead day‑to‑day production and yard activities on a rotating 6am-2pm / 2pm-10pm shift pattern. You will supervise a team of about 10 colleagues on the shop floor, ensuring safety, quality and performance targets are met each shift.

The role offers hands‑on leadership across production and logistics, with exposure to continuous improvement and cross‑functional collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading teams within manufacturing, production, logistics or warehouse environments.
  • Strong people management and communication skills.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements and safe systems of work.
  • Experience working to operational KPIs and production targets.
  • Ability to coach, motivate and support frontline teams.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise day‑to‑day production and yard operations to ensure a safe, compliant and efficient working environment.
  • Lead, motivate and support a team of operational colleagues.
  • Monitor progress against production plans and take action to address any issues affecting performance.
  • Carry out regular safety audits, shift checks and operational inspections.
  • Ensure Health & Safety standards are maintained and promote a zero‑harm culture.
  • Support quality standards by ensuring correct operating procedures are followed at all times.
  • Work closely with engineering, operations and site support teams to resolve issues and minimise downtime.
  • Support absence management, return‑to‑work discussions and other first‑line people management activities.
  • Ensure colleagues have the tools, equipment and resources needed to perform their roles effectively.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Job Description Key Responsibilities May Include:
  • Lead by example within the assigned functional area, offering guidance and support to peers, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring smooth production operations.
  • Actively support production activities, stepping in during shifts or breaks to maintain workflow and operational continuity.
  • Collaborate with plant administration to ensure adherence to established policies and procedures, promoting consistency and operational compliance.
  • Assist Plant leadership in enforcing policies and procedures to maintain inventory accuracy and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for specialized areas, such as forklift operations, pallet sorting, or repair lines, providing expertise and ensuring best practices are followed.
  • Fulfill assigned production duties, ensuring quality and efficiency in line with plant performance goals.

Operations Supervisor

Type: Full Time, Permanent

Shift Pattern: Rotating 2-shift pattern (6am-2pm / 2pm-10pm)

Lead from the front and help keep our operation running safely, efficiently and effectively. CHEP is looking for an experienced Operations Supervisor to join our Durham site. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you'll take responsibility for the day‑to‑day supervision of production and yard operations, ensuring safety, quality and operational targets are achieved every shift. You'll lead a team of approximately 10 colleagues, spending the majority of your time on the shop floor supporting your team, monitoring performance, resolving operational issues and ensuring the operation runs smoothly. The role also provides valuable exposure across both production and logistics activities, helping you develop a broad operational skillset. What We're Looking For:
