Job summary

Nottinghamshire Police is seeking an IT Infrastructure professional for an 18-month fixed-term contract, based on-site with flexible working options. The role covers the management of applications, systems and storage both on-premise and in the Cloud, ensuring security and availability.

Internal candidates may be considered for secondment. The successful candidate will work with external suppliers and IS teams, supporting in-life services and providing Technical leadership on new proposals, with

  • Experience applying automated systems to support business functions.
  • Proficiency with Windows Server versions (2012–2022/2025) and Windows 11.
  • Experience in an ITIL-based organisation and involvement in projects with IS teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage availability, operation and upgrade of applications, systems and storage on premise and in the Cloud.
  • Maintain, supporting and administering the configuration of the data centre and server infrastructure to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
  • Act as Technical Lead for evaluating new requests and coordinating with external suppliers/engineers on upgrade work.

Salary £39,276 to £41,487 per annum (pro rata if part time)

Main purpose of the role:

As part of a team you will be responsible for managing the availability, operation and upgrade of the applications, systems and storage hosted on premise and in the Cloud.

You will be responsible for maintaining, supporting and administering the configuration of the data centre and server infrastructure, systems and applications to maintain confidentiality, integrity, security and availability of services through the lifecycle.

In this fixed term role, you will NOT be required to be part of the "on-call" team, even though this is documented in the job description.

Although you will primarily be involved in supporting in-life services, your expertise will be required as a Technical lead on the evaluation of new requests and proposals for new or changed services, liaising directly with external suppliers and engineers in connection upgrade work completed by external support engineers.

Knowledge and Experience

  • The application of automated systems to the support of specific business functions or processes.
  • The frameworks and principles on which networks, systems, equipment and resources are based.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012/2016/2019/2022 & 2025
  • Microsoft Windows - Windows 11
  • UNIX Operating System (Solaris, RED HAT & SUSE Linux)
  • Microsoft application Software such as Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager, Failover Cluster Manager, DPM, System Centre Operations Manager, SCCM
  • Exchange 2010 / Office 365
  • Active Directory & AGPM
  • System gateway security (Email, Web access, server access etc)
  • Network load balancing (Edge Nexus)
  • Backup and restore technologies, virtual and physical
  • Multiple NAS and SAN Technologies ie Nimble
  • Making core decisions about DR/BC at the appropriate time and without reference to anyone else, but taking into account the needs of the business, situation, priorities, constraints and the availability of necessary information
  • Must have experience of working within an ITIL based organisation
  • Experience of working on project work for new and existing systems with other IS teams not just BAU work.

Skills and Abilities

  • Be able to work with external suppliers on new and existing systems using remote control support techniques whilst maintaining the data integrity/security of the servers and IS Infrastructure.
  • Be able to communicate both verbally and in writing clearly, concisely and courteously to users, suppliers and colleagues of all levels.
  • Be self-motivated, self-confident, enthusiastic and able to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Be pro-active, flexible, open minded and innovative in style; willing to experiment with new ideas and implement change.
  • Be able to create new Change request documents as part of ITL change management process. These will go out to the regional Police forces CAB for decisions to be made on if that change will be approved or declined due to other system relations or departmental requirements.
  • Be able to analyse a problem or situation, break it down systematically into its component parts and identify the relationships between these parts,selecting the appropriate method/tool to resolve the problem and reflect on the result, so that that learning is identified and absorbed.
  • Ability to try multiple approaches to solving a problem and make recommendations on the best and recommended course of action based on an investigation.
  • Be able to deal effectively with unexpected situations, taking advantage of opportunities and overcoming problems.
