Job summary

J Murphy & Sons is recruiting an Operations Director to lead the Energy Team on National Grid projects and the ETP Framework in Kentish Town and South West Wales. The role emphasises safe delivery, strong leadership, and strategic cost management within a dynamic energy and transmission context.

The candidate will oversee project direction, develop the team, and maintain close client and stakeholder relationships to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.

Qualifications

• HV Transmission experience (132kV–400kV) or major civil projects.
• Experience in an Operations Director or Senior Managerial role.
• Strong commercial and contractual awareness.
• Experience with complex multi-discipline enhancement projects delivering to programme & cost controls.
• Excellent stakeholder management with clients and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

• Lead scope delivery safely, on time, to quality standards and budget.
• Set project standards; ensure consistency across the portfolio.
• Develop and lead the regional operational and project team.
• Line-manage Project Directors and chair project team meetings.
• Manage 'fit to start' and ensure smooth handover from bid to delivery.
• Foster client relationships and cross-stakeholder collaboration.
• Present strategic updates and develop plans.
• Develop cost forecasts and regularly update.
• Lead resource forecasting and align with programme.
• Drive improvement actions to meet financial objectives.

A day in the life of a Murphy Operations Director:

• Lead the scope of works and ensure they are delivered in a safe manner, on time, to the required quality standards, meeting the acceptance criteria and achieving the expected financial outcomes.
• Sets the overall standard on the project/contract, ensuring consistency across the portfolio and in line with standards policies and procedures.
• Build and develop the wider operational and project management team to build management capability and deliver all aspects of the project/contract requirements.
• Line management of Project Directors that are accountable for the operational delivery of the project, chairing regular project team meetings, ensuring actions are recorded and closed out.
• Manage the "fit to start" process to ensure that we mobilise in a controlled and timely manner to facilitate the timely delivery of the project scope. Ensure there is an effective, comprehensive, and formal handover from the work winning team to the delivery team.
• Develop and maintain effective communication and collaborative relationships with the Client and other project stakeholders.
• Present strategic updates and develop strategic plans.
• Lead the development of a detailed cost forecast for the project, ensuring it is reviewed and updated regularly.
• Lead the development of resource forecasts (staff, labour, key plant and materials), ensuring they are aligned and coordinated with the programme.
• Lead the development and implementation of improvement actions where necessary to ensure the financial objectives are achieved / bettered.
