Job description

At BUUK Infrastructure, our vision is to be the leading utility partner to accelerate the UK towards net zero for all our customers. Our group of companies has been the major drive for change and innovation over 30 years.

We provide a supportive environment that is committed to enabling our people to be the best - ensuring they feel proud to be themselves and part of BUUK Infrastructure.

We are looking for Operational Technology Manager who would like to help us reach our mission to "earn customer loyalty and drive business growth by providing consistently excellent service".

Purpose of this role

To provide dedicated leadership and accountable ownership for the operational technology platforms and infrastructure that underpin BUUK critical operational services. The role will establish secure, resilient and supportable OT services across fibre initially and, where agreed, electric, water and other operational networks. The postholder will define service boundaries, build sustainable capability, manage suppliers and roadmaps, and coordinate OT infrastructure, cyber security, risk, architecture and service management.

Your key responsibilities are
  • Own the OT infrastructure and platform strategy, roadmap, service model and lifecycle across the agreed BUUK scope.
  • Establish clear boundaries and operating procedures between IT, OT asset owners, engineering teams, Cyber Security and third parties.
  • Lead the OT team and develop the capability, documentation, rota, succession and technical standards needed for sustainable support.
  • Maintain accurate OT asset inventories, architecture documentation, network diagrams, dependencies, support models and technical risk records.
  • Oversee OT identity, privileged access, network segregation, hosting, monitoring, backup, recovery, patching and vulnerability remediation.
  • Embed security in OT design, procurement, onboarding, change and supplier management.
  • Coordinate incident detection, response, recovery and post-incident improvement for OT platforms.
  • Manage OT suppliers and support agreements, ensuring service levels, controlled remote access and operational accountability.
  • Plan and govern OT change to protect availability, continuity, safety and regulatory obligations.
  • Develop and exercise resilience, disaster recovery and continuity arrangements.
  • Work collaboratively with the PMO and Projects function to provide governance, prioritisation, resource planning, risk management, benefits realisation and successful transition of change into operational service.
  • Provide OT technical leadership, operational-readiness assessments, risk evaluations and service-transition requirements throughout project and programme lifecycles.
  • Support portfolio planning and investment prioritisation with lifecycle roadmaps, dependencies, resilience requirements and technical risk assessments.
  • Report transparently on availability, capacity, vulnerabilities, incidents, risks, lifecycle, compliance and roadmap delivery.
  • Any role-specific security screening required for access to critical operational environments.
  • Participation in an on-call or standby rota and out-of-hours incident support, where required.
Degree-level qualification in information technology, engineering, telecommunications, cyber security or a related discipline, or equivalent substantial professional experience.
  • Relevant professional qualification or training in infrastructure, networking, cloud, OT, cyber security or service management.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in OT, infrastructure resilience or cyber security.
Experience/Knowledge
  • Significant experience managing enterprise infrastructure, networks, cloud or operational technology in a critical or highly available environment.
  • Experience leading technical teams and suppliers through operational transition, service establishment or major platform change.
  • Strong knowledge of identity and access management, privileged access, network segmentation, hosting, monitoring, backup, recovery, patching and vulnerability management.
  • Experience of asset inventories, architecture documentation, lifecycle planning, risk registers and support models.
  • Understanding of OT cyber security, incident response, business continuity, disaster recovery and controlled change.
  • Experience supporting project, programme or portfolio governance within OT, infrastructure or critical-service environments.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and assurance expectations relevant to critical technology environments.
  • Experience balancing availability, resilience, security, safety, cost and delivery priorities.
Abilities/Skills
  • Leads technical teams with clarity, builds capability and creates a disciplined operational culture.
  • Makes risk-based decisions while protecting critical-service availability and continuity.
  • Communicates complex infrastructure and OT risks clearly to technical, operational and senior audiences.
  • Establishes structure in complex or incompletely documented environments.
  • Strong incident leadership, problem-solving, supplier-management and influencing skills.
  • Plans roadmaps, resources and lifecycle investment using evidence and operational priorities.
  • Collaborates across IT, Cyber Security, engineering, the PMO and operational teams without weakening accountability.
  • Maintains high standards of documentation, change control, service ownership and continuous improvement.
Desirable
  • Experience in utilities, fibre networks, telecommunications, SCADA, industrial control systems or field-connected technology.
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Azure, networking, CISSP, CISM, IEC 62443 or ITIL.
  • Familiarity with NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO 27001, Cyber Assessment Framework or sector-specific requirements.
  • Experience establishing separate identity, cloud or management environments for OT.
