We have a fantastic opportunity for an On‑Screen Journalist to join our Wales news team based at our newsroom and studio in Cardiff. This high‑profile, on‑screen role is for someone with a proven track record of delivering striking, high‑quality, distinctive journalism on television, on ITVX and online. Applicants from the wider South Wales valleys region are also considered and a discussion about a home base may be possible. Wales is a richly diverse nation and we are looking for a person who will help ensure our coverage is representative of the people and backgrounds of all those who live here.
Responsibilities
- Generate original and creative ideas, contributing to the news agenda of the day, on‑screen and online.
- Research and develop story ideas thoroughly for on‑air and online output.
- Maintain and nurture a wide range of relevant contacts.
- Be proactive about diversity, equity & inclusion, ensuring output reflects news stories and issues across the audience spectrum.
- Sourc e interesting contributors from all parts of the community.
- Tell the story through engaging and authoritative presentation, whether live, as part of a news package or across digital platforms.
- Self‑shoot items where appropriate to a high standard.
- Edit packages creatively and efficiently, making full use of production tools.
- Curate ITV’s digital offering across all platforms as required.
- Create accurate graphics for bulletins, programmes and packages using the template‑based graphic system.
- Write scripts that are accurate, concise and engaging.
- Meet all online and on‑air deadlines, reacting quickly to breaking stories and liaising with the news desk.
- Provide copyright clearance details and basic media management.
- Exercise excellent editorial judgement, maintaining professional journalistic standards and adhering to ITV’s Legal & Compliance, ITV Trust and OFCOM guidelines.
- Work long and unsociable hours at short notice and transport, carry and operate camera equipment as required.
- Travel to district offices or other news operations when required and attend relevant forums, development sessions and meetings off site.
Qualifications and Experience
- The ability to dress professionally, speak clearly and deliver the script or interview with an authoritative yet relaxed style.
- Proven technical ability (self‑shooting, editing, live reporting & digital).
- Strong and creative writing skills – accurate spelling and grammar essential.
- Fully qualified NCTJ, BJTC or equivalent experience.
- A strong knowledge of media law & compliance, the Ofcom Code and excellent editorial judgement.
- Excellent news judgement aligned with ITV News aspirations and comprehensive knowledge of Welsh and UK news agendas.
- Experience of working independently while maintaining a professional, organised and calm approach under pressure.
- Strong network of contacts and the ability to think laterally about where stories are developing.
- Initiative, self‑motivation, quick‑thinking and decisive decision making skills.
- Understanding of DE&I and Health & Safety policies.
- Knowledge of Wales, its distinct features and the 2026 context.
- Experience with social media and online platforms to extend reach of journalism.
- Willingness to embrace new technology and workflow, including self‑shooting and editing of lives.
- Ability to bring in stories from under‑represented people across the region.
- Prior experience or a strong interest in the Welsh Senedd elections and ability to plan multi‑platform coverage for 2026.
