Job summary

The Alan Turing Institute is seeking an Applied Engineer to closely collaborate with analysts, turning questions into fast, robust analytics on the data platform. You’ll prototype rapidly and scale successful efforts into event-driven services, with ownership of the analytics you build.

You will work with the Lead and Senior Applied Engineers, applying statistical judgment and delivering deployable data products in an on-site setting, supporting Defence analysts.

Qualifications

• Experience building analytics, data science, or data products.
• Experience moving exploratory analysis beyond notebooks into deployed, tested solutions.
• Solid Python software engineering: testing, version control, code review.
• Applied statistical and data-science competence: choosing methods and communicating uncertainty to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with Defence analysts, largely on-site, to understand requirements and develop analytical tools.
• Identify recurring analytical requests and develop efficient, event-driven processes that update and present results when new data becomes available.
• Develop prototypes quickly and turn them into tested, monitored and deployable services on the team's data platform.
• Apply statistical judgment and communicate uncertainty clearly to non-specialist users.
• Build analyst-facing interfaces such as dashboards, notebooks, command-line tools and small web applications.
