The Alan Turing Institute in London seeks a Senior Applied Engineer to take ownership from problem definition to delivery. You will partner with analysts to identify automation opportunities, design and build analytical tools on the team’s data platform, and help drive adoption of these tools in practice.
You will lead the delivery of analytical products, turn exploratory analysis into reliable services, mentor colleagues, and support technical leadership for the team.
We are looking for a Senior Applied Engineer, who will take responsibility for this process from initial problem definition through to delivery. Working alongside partner analysts, you will identify which requirements are suitable for automation, design and build analytical tools on the team's data platform, and support their adoption in practice. You will lead the delivery of analytical products, establish effective approaches for turning exploratory analysis into reliable services, mentor less experienced colleagues and support the Lead Applied Engineer with technical leadership where required. You will join the team's founding cohort of engineers, reporting to the Lead Applied Engineer.
This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone with strong statistical and engineering judgement, experience of turning analysis into operational tools, and a clear interest in producing work that analysts use in practice.
This role is looking for someone who can hold statistics and engineering in the same head, caring whether the method is sound and if the service stays up. The ideal candidate will have a track record of building analytics or data products that deliver genuine value for non-technical user. They will be comfortable taking exploratory analysis beyond the notebooks, will possess the statistical judgement to select appropriate methods and clearly explaining complex findings to stakeholders who may not have a technical background.
Success in this role will come from working closely with end users, understanding their challenges, iterating on feedback, and creating practical tools that become embedded in day-to-day decision making. Ultimately, the team is seeking a technically strong, delivery-focused problem solver who is motivated by operational impact and measures success by whether people actively use and rely on what they build.
Please see our portal for a full breakdown of the role.
