Job summary

Great British Energy - Nuclear seeks a Health Safety and Welfare Lead to drive the development and execution of safety strategies across the SMR Project. You will lead safety governance, engage with ONR and HSE, and ensure high-hazard safety standards in design, construction, and operation.

You will oversee HSE programmes, support induction and training, and champion a proactive safety culture with suppliers and contractors, working from Warrington with on-site travel.

Qualifications

• Experience in health and safety management within nuclear or highly regulated industry.
• Strong understanding of CDM Regulations and construction health and safety on large projects.
• Experience coordinating safety performance across multi‑organisation environments.
• Deep understanding of ISO 45001 and audit coordination.
• Knowledge of process safety and major accident hazard prevention.
• Proven ability to engage with regulators (ONR/HSE) and lead compliance.
• Development of risk-based assurance programs and prioritisation of findings.

Responsibilities

• Support Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability on safety matters and promote a strong safety culture.
• Champion positive safety culture across all project teams, contractors and supply chains.
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations and related standards.
• Establish governance for monitoring and reporting safety performance across the SMR Project.
• Coordinate SMR Programme safety requirements through the project and supply chains.
• Ensure project-wide compliance with occupational health and high-hazard safety requirements.
• Interact with regulators (HSE, ONR, EA/NRW) and submit required reports and documentation.
• Identify and mitigate nuclear and conventional safety risks across design to operation phases.
• Work with contractors and partners to ensure uniform safety standards.
• Provide SME contributions to design reviews, inductions and training materials.
• Establish KPIs and reporting mechanisms for safety performance.
