Job summary

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions, part of Spirax Group, seeks an NPI Workshop Technician in Falmouth to fabricate prototype parts and tooling using CNC machinery, CAD/CAM, and metrology systems. You will work with design, production and process engineers to develop robust manufacturing processes.

The role involves setting up CNC lathes/milling centers, maintaining equipment and contributing to rapid prototyping and DfM discussions, with a focus on high-quality parts and timely delivery.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on mechanical/engineering experience in workshops or manufacturing settings.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings or CAD models.
  • Experience with CNC mills/lathes and basic CAM/G-code.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC machines, including lathes and machining centres.
  • Maintain machine tools and coolant systems.
  • Plan manufacture of components to meet end-user requirements.
  • Inspect prototype parts using conventional tools and CMM where applicable.
  • Use additive manufacturing to produce prototype fixtures and tooling.
  • Collaborate with design/production to improve manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

The NPI (New ProductInnovation) Support Team is responsible for manufacturing prototype parts andspecialist tooling for Watson Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions. Using CNCmachinery, CAD/CAM, advanced metrology systems & additive technology wemanufacture and inspect new product concepts and develop robust manufacturingand inspection processes.

Working with Design,Production and Process engineers, we ensure that prototype components aremanufactured to the highest quality and in a timely and efficient manner,turning innovative ideas into reality and reducing time to market. The successful applicant will work well as part of a highly skilled team & willalways be looking for opportunities to improve and enjoy supporting fast-pacedinnovation in a market-leading global organisation.

Key accountabilities include:
  • Setting & operating CNC lathes & machiningcentres.
  • Taking responsibility for day-to-day care &maintenance of machinery & ancillaries, including monitoring of coolantsystems.
  • Using innovative & modern methods, you will beplanning the manufacture of components to best suit end-user requirements.
  • Working with our design team, you will be involvedin the inspection & measurement of prototype parts using conventionalmeasuring instruments & state of the art methods such as a CMM (Coordinate MeasuringMachine). This will extend beyond components manufactured on site to bought-inparts such as mouldings & castings.
  • Using additive manufacturing technology to rapidlyproduce prototype parts, fixturing & tooling.
  • Discussing concepts with design, production &process engineers to advise on best practice for DfM (Design for Manufacture).
  • Regular involvement in the design & manufactureof tooling & fixturing to enable component manufacture & aid withconstant improvement of processes.
  • Maintaining condition & stock levels of cuttingtools used in the NPI workshop to ensure that we always have the requiredhardware.
  • Involved with the creation & implementation ofworking procedures to ensure efficiency & consistency is maintained.
Skills/Experience

  • Hands-on experience in mechanical, technical, or fabrication settings—such asprofessional workshops, CNC/precision manufacturing environments,school/college/university projects, apprenticeships, maker spaces, DIY/hobbybuilds, automotive/motorcycle/bicycle repair, model making, woodworking,metalworking, robotics, or home engineering projects.
  • Provenability (or strong demonstrated potential) to safely operate, set up, andmaintain machine tools—including CNC mills, CNC lathes, and/or conventionalmachinery with attention to workholding, tool selection, fixturing, materialhandling, and workshop best practices.
  • Experience(professional or project-based) reading, interpreting, and working fromengineering drawings, technical sketches, specifications, or CAD models toproduce accurate, high-quality components.
  • Familiaritywith precision metrology and quality checks, such as using calipers,micrometers, gauges, first-off inspections, in-process verification, or basicCMM principles.
  • Exposureto CNC operations—including setup, running programs, maintaining tolerances,and/or basic G-code understanding is highly valued; senior-level candidateswill demonstrate independent programming/editing (via G-code and/or CAMsoftware) and consistent production of precision parts.
  • Knowledgeof additive manufacturing/3D printing (beneficial at any level) and itsintegration with subtractive processes—e.g., printing near-net-shape parts forCNC finishing, creating custom fixtures/jigs, or applying Design for AdditiveManufacturing principles.
  • Previoususe of CAD/CAM software (e.g., Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks, FreeCAD,Onshape, Mastercam, or similar) at any level—from introductory modeling/3Dprint prep to advanced toolpath generation is advantageous.
