About the Job

Have you built a business, opened new markets or turned a promising idea into commercial growth? Lampton Group is seeking a high-calibre Non-Executive Director who can bring commercial insight, entrepreneurial thinking and an independent perspective to its Group Board.

We are particularly interested in people who have won customers, developed services or helped businesses grow. We want someone who sees opportunities others miss, challenges established assumptions and understands what it takes to turn ideas into sustainable results.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future of a publicly owned group delivering essential services, combining commercial ambition with a clear public purpose. The Lampton Group Board is collectively responsible for the success of the Lampton Group of companies and is made up of directors common to all Group companies.

As a Non-Executive Director (NED), you will provide independent oversight, constructive challenge and strategic guidance. You will also be a trusted sounding board for the Executive Leadership Team, sharing experience and offering practical advice as they assess opportunities, test ideas and develop the business. Alongside this, you will help ensure the Group maintains the highest standards of governance, financial discipline and accountability.

Key Responsibilities include:
Commercial Growth and Innovation
  • Help shape the Group’s approach to business development and sustainable commercial growth.
  • Bring an entrepreneurial perspective to identifying potential customers, partnerships, markets and services.
  • Support and challenge the Executive team in assessing commercial opportunities, weighing demand, profitability, investment, risk and delivery capacity.
  • Encourage fresh thinking and innovation, offering practical advice and guidance while respecting the Executive team’s responsibility for delivery.
  • Help ensure commercial growth supports the Group’s public purpose and long-term success.
Board and Governance
  • Actively contribute to the effective operation of the Group Board and, where appropriate, its committees
  • Contribute to board discussions, bringing independent perspective and constructive challenge to decision making
  • Uphold compliance with legal, regulatory and governance requirements
  • Prepare for, and attend, Board and Committee meetings
  • Provide constructive challenge and support to the Executive team
Strategic Leadership
  • Contribute to the development and monitor the delivery of the Group’s strategy and business plan, including objectives and priorities, while providing constructive challenge.
Performance and Assurance
  • Participate in the evaluation of the Group Board’s performance, as well as that of individual directors
  • Monitor the Group’s performance in achieving the strategy and meeting agreed objectives and KPIs.
Finance and Risk Oversight
  • Provide critical review and challenge to help ensure integrity of financial information and reporting
  • Monitor financial performance, ensuring robust oversight of investments, budgets, forecasts and value for money
  • Review and assess risk management frameworks including regular review of the strategic risk register
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build, maintain and help support relationships with shareholders and stakeholders including communication of strategy and performance
  • Encourage a culture of integrity, accountability, ethical behaviour and inclusion
  • Foster a strong culture of employee wellbeing and health and safety
  • Promote learning and continuous improvement within the business
Networking
  • Support the business by building connections with networks of relevant individuals and organisations.
Experience and Qualifications Required:
  • Board-level experience as a non-executive director
  • Extensive experience at a senior leadership level preferably in a local authority trading company environment
  • Expertise in at least one relevant area:
  • A Business Development/Commercial background, with a track record of building or growing a business, winning customers, developing services or opening new markets. We particularly welcome entrepreneurial experience, whether gained as a founder or through leading innovation and growth within an established organisation.

  • Significant experience of asset management
  • Understanding of the Lampton Group of companies and the environment in which it operates
