A leading company is seeking a Planning Policy Manager to guide their local development plan through examination. This role involves managing the process effectively, leading a capable team, and addressing challenges related to affordable housing targets. The ideal candidate will have prior examination experience and strong leadership skills.
LB of Newham is currently reviewing their local development plan and is presenting to full council on the 28th April to seek authority to submit it for examination. The examination would commence once the local plan is submitted. They haven't appointed an inspector yet, but hearings are likely to be in September at the earliest.
They are urgently in need of a Planning Policy Manager with experience in guiding a plan through to examination. The ideal candidate will have prior examination experience and understand how to manage the process effectively.
The role reports to the Director of Planning and Development. The team has a two-part structure: two officers working on Transport Planning, typically providing comments on planning applications, and the Policy team, which includes four Principals. The Principals are highly capable and have diverse topic areas, but they require leadership to realize their full potential.
The primary challenge is navigating the plan through examination, especially given the high affordable housing target, which is likely to be a key issue. The successful candidate will need political acumen to manage this process, present effectively, and communicate with the mayor and portfolio holders about necessary modifications.
